Avodart -Is it safe to father a child while taking it?

I have been taking Avodart for the last 12 months.

Planning to start a family and a little skeptical about continuing with Avodart.

Read some articles on the internet with the following information:

• It is important that you do not father a baby while taking Avodart.
• If you father a child, your partner must tell her doctor that the baby was conceived while you were taking Avodart. If your partner becomes pregnant, or thinks she has become pregnant, she must contact her prescriber.
•This medicine has been reported to affect semen characteristics (reduction in sperm count, semen volume, and sperm motility) in healthy men. This means that there is a possibility that it may therefore reduce your fertility and ability to father a child. If this is a concern to you, you should discuss fertility with your doctor before starting treatment.

I had also contacted GlaxoSmithKline about AVODART and got the following response.

“You have asked an important question about AVODARTŽ (dutasteride). We encourage you to discuss medical concerns and symptoms with the appropriate healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider is in the best position to answer your question.â€￾

Although, I would be consulting my Doctor but any other additional feedback would be helpful.

Should I quit Avodart

Thanks

No side effects as such. I wouldn't like to take a risk and maybe dis-coontinue it for 6 months. Even if that leads to loss of hair. FYI, I have got a very successful hair transplant done and the results are great. I am taking avodart just to minimize further hair loss and strengthen the existing hair.

As mentioned across the net, avodart has not been passed for the use of male pattern baldness yet. No studies have been carried out regarding reproduction.

From what people will say and doctors - they will suggest you to come of it.

More data is available and associated with finasteride. Still doctors suggest you to stop using it, although some people in this forum have fathered a child with no problem.

Seek your doctor.

Let's be precise and say that _some_ doctors may suggest such a thing, but not others. The FDA has removed all such restrictions on the use of finasteride. As long as the FDA thinks it's safe to use while fathering children, what difference does it make if you can find an occasional less-informed doctor with a contrary opinion?

You're kidding right? What difference does it make... LOL, gotta be kidding me.

The FDA is a corrupt, paid-off "federal" entity, with deep pockets funded partly by the drug industry itself. Conflict of interest abounds and drug safety is not their top priority, despite what they might have you believe.

The FDA is useless and should be eyed with extreme caution. Just because something is FDA approved doesn't mean it's safe, half the time they get paid off to push drugs to the market by lobbyists and board members within the pharmaceutical industry. As for Merck being "truthful"... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8IYKCkXXvY

While this is a discussion about Dutasteride, not sure why Bryan is so pro-5AR inhibitor and pro-FDA even though he claims he doesn't -- and won't -- take Finasteride himself (no way to verify).

I'm starting to have my suspicions about your motives in trying to push these products while significantly downplaying the risks, Bryan... no offense, but do you work for big pharma, too? No way to verify either way.

This is nice thing i find out about Lyrica:

Lyrica can also cause reproductive problems in males. Male users of Lyrica had problems conceiving children, and those who were successful in conceiving were subject to an increased risk for birth defects in their offspring.

And i've been taking this drug for a year :freaked: It wasn't even listed in the side effects. Damn Doctor!!! i'm only 23
