Attempting To Assess My Front Thinning, Type Of Treatment

Hi all!

I am trying to figure out how bad my hair thinning is and what I should do about it. I should have reached out for opinions years ago.

This is what my hair looks like when I comb it to be "fluffy." Nothing noticeably wrong, right?

But when it's uncombed or I go out and about for a little bit, it falls apart and this is what it looks like (so this is what it "normally" looks like). Even if I use gel, you can see the scalp through the grouped-together chunks of hair. I exaggerated it a bit here by manipulating the hair to show the full effect:

The front of my scalp thinned roughly during my Junior year of college in 2010. Since then, it doesn't seem to have gotten any worse -- it's almost like something "happened" to it, but then it stopped. If it has gotten any worse, it's been minimal.

My hair line has not changed at all. Just the thinning in the front. I do not notice an excess amount of hair on the shower floor or anything like that.

No one in my family is bald or has thinning hair. We're Armenian and have thick hair. My grand grandfather on my mom's side went mostly bald, but that's it. My grandpas, dad, and brothers all had/have perfect hair. Not sure how genetics plays a part, but thought I would throw this info out there.

So the front of my hair IS thinning / has thinned, right? Or am I looking too much into this? My mom says it has thinned, and I certainly feel it has.

I've been using Jason Thin-To-Thick Shampoo and Conditioner, so I'm not sure if that has helped stop it from becoming worse. This is what puzzles me about my thinning, that it doesn't seem to have progressed at all.

I've read on here about Propecia / Rogaine etc. Based on these photos, what would you recommend I start doing? Is Rogaine enough for a case like this, or should I go for the "Big Three?"

Oh, in case it's important, I'm 28.

Thank you so much for any help you can provide! This site is so informative, and I thank you for putting together such a wonderful resource!

Unfortunately it is said that your moms father has the most influence on the odds of going bald so I guess it isn't too surprising you are seeing thinning despite having strong history elsewhere. It is most likely male pattern baldness but you should probably get some tests done first before getting on finasteride, which is what you will need to do if you plan on fighting it. Hair looks great when styled.

Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it!

My mom's dad had full, thick hair. Would you still say it looks like male pattern baldness?

How would I go about getting tests? Get a referral from my doctor to see a hair specialist?

Thank you again!

Oh your great grandfather! I misread that. Yeah that would be good, but make sure it is a dermatologist who specialises in hair. Does that part of ur scalp itch at all?

Oh and to answer your other question, rogaine is never enough no matter what kind of hairloss you have. It stimulates hair to grow but it doesn't fight DHT which is what causes the miniaturisation of the hair follicles.

Sometimes it itches, but not generally.

Do you have any theories for why the hair thinning just "happened" and didn't seem to progress at all?

I have that same horrid bald/thin spot directly in the front center area of my hairline. It's the worst. If I were just receding at the temples, had a bald, patchy crown, and had diffuse thinning all over (all of which I am), I could still faux-hawk a decent style if the front center weren't decimated - I have the face for it. It's the worst. Good luck to you.

Seems like classic diffuse male pattern baldness, I am the same, I can style my hair to cover my thinning but after a while it will start to go flat and back to normal, exposing my thinning.

You should try see a doctor asap, most likely should start treatment asap, like finasteride and minoxidil.

Went to the dermatologist last week.

She prescribed a generic nizoral shampoo from Rite Aid's pharmacy, finasteride pills (though my insurance doesn't cover it), and mentioned the minoxidil/Rogaine foam.

My thinning has not progressed since it happened several years ago, at least not noticeably.

So I have a question: is it necessary to do both the pill/shampoo AND the foam? Can I start with just the pill and the shampoo? Or should I also do the Rogaine foam?

Only reason I ask is because of cost. Also, where do you guys get your pills from?
