At 50 Is It Worth Starting On finasteride

I've been using minoxidil for around 5 months now and things are
looking worse , and still shedding a lot, although that only started a few weeks ago,
I was thinking of getting some finasteride and using a low dose but at
50 years old would you think it would be worthwhile or is that too old to get any benefit from it

Mx560 just to give you some insight that will sound good to you, a drug similiar to finasteride called dutasteride a few years ago was actually recommended for men 50 and up. Especially since the drug was orginally used to combat enlarged prostate.

What you got to determine about starting finasteride is simple.......how far gone are you in the balding process ? I notice a pattern of men that pretty much has gone years and years of being bald and assume finasteride is going to fix it. I also see men that maby a Norwood 4 to 5 and the finasteride enables them to keep what they have, so then they use a growth stimulator or even a Hair Transplant to get them back up to a full looking head of hair. Usually hair transplant patients recommend their patients get on finasteride to maintain what they have, and hair transplants are alot better than they was during the 80's. Just look at Tom Arnold (actor who admits to it) and even Steven Seagal (the pony tailed heart throb haha)

The best part about finasteride is it has a short half-life so if you see any sides it will be out of your system faster. Keep in mind during a study a percentage of people that did report side effects was actually people on the placebo pill. Id imagne a few people that reported side effects on here could of had it all in their head as well. However i don't take the stuff because i myself personally am hoping a topical solution comes out. Im alittle bit afraid of the sides in terms of me being a bodybuilder, i need all the anabolic DHT i can

Actually, at 50 years of age taking finasteride could actually be beneficial for you.
Many studies suggest that it has a preventive effect for Benign prostate hyperplasia, and prostate cancer. And I don´t mean to scare you, but a man in his 50s on what I would assume is a western diet; you could be in the risk group. (As am I in about 20-30 years or so)

Discuss it with your doctor.

Had messed with the idea of sticking other stuff on my scalp (you know)
but just taking it orally would be so much simpler

You have to have an enlarged prostate to see that kind of difference.

Actually at the 1mg dosage you won't see much of a difference as it takes 5mg (Proscar) to shrink an enlarged prostate but you sure as hell will find that the 1mg dosage makes ejaculating more like a peeing/organism. :woot:

And of coarse less DHT being made in the prostate as we age can help prevent cancer and an enlarged prostate so even 1mg can't hurt in that department.

You will continue to bald with a growth stimulant like minoxidil. unless you use a DHT inhibitor.

I am in my late 40s and I halted all hair loss and grew some back but you must remember that I jumped on it before I had lost to much. Clearly lowering my DHT levels saved my hair.

First stabilize your hormones and halt the DHT with oral finasteride and topical Nizoral shampoo and alternate with head and shoulders or something with zinc in it.

Minoxidil can trick you as it does not prevent hair loss, it only grows healthy hair that is able to do so. This over the counter stuff really fools allot of people into thinking they are doing something good for their hair, its like fertilizing (minoxidil) your wilted and dying plants when they really need water (finasteride).

Better move fast MR, because it is easier to halt the loss now before DHT kills the hair cells permanently.

Spoke to the Doctor and she was dead against me starting on finasteride , she said if I go ahead then it'll be at my own risk,

She said she wouldnt prescribe it for hairloss anyway ,

so i'm now looking at where I can order 1mg tablets from with the
intention of splitting them into 2,

I'm a diffuse thinner and its noticeable but I wouldnt say it's too bad yet
but I want to do as much as I can before it gets worse

My dad is going to specialist about enlarged prostate next week, guess he'll get the same drugs huh, but the 5mg! Will his hair grow back thicker at 80!!?!

Also is it better to break them and take half or not when it's rapid hairloss?

I've been on 1.25 mg of Fincar for a while and I have no ejaculate problems whatsoever

The only thing I experienced was dull ball ache for about a week, it was really obnoxious but it went away.

I would not exactly call a little more watery than usual "lousy". Seems for most it stays that way unless you discontinue the finasteride.

To late for that probably because of age, if he wanted thicker hair should of started finasteride before any loss took place.

Merk found that the 1mg dosage was ideal for halting hair loss in most men with male pattern baldness and 5mg was ideal for most with BPM.

What was her reason for you not to do finasteride or is she not even wanting to prescribe Propecia?

Hmmm , I never asked for propecia I only asked for finasteride and she
wasnt very sympathetic,
I figured she'd know it was basically the same , but she is pretty young and I was thinking of going back and asking to see a male Doctor ,
in the meantime I'm going to get some from inhouse

Thanks for your answers, male pattern baldness I get, but what is BPM? Not beats per minute in this case, I'm guessing.

And Fincar, finasteride, dutasteride, Propecia etc etc.... Hellllllllllp!! Difference, If I'm quite speedy on the loss, is Propecia going to be strong enough, even if it stops it, is there any chance of regrow?

Sorry, I should typed BPM, which is Prostate Enlargement and is short for: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

In my late 40s my hair looked much better after about 2-3 months on finasteride and in a year I believe some regrew. After about 2 years I up the dose to 1.6mg, I immediately saw much less shedding and I have regrew I would say 30%. Like I said I have been aggressive and jumped on it as soon as I saw a thinning crown which was shocking to see for me discoverer as I always (had had) very thick hair at the crown.

My Dad went for his enlarged prostate thingy....... and they gave him something called Tam... can't remember the exact name,, but Tam something or other, but it wasn't any of the ones here that we know.. dutasteride/finasteride/Pros/Propecia etc....and I felt sure it would have been...?
