Are balding patterns genetic?

Assuming I inherited the baldness gene from my maternal grandfather, will my hair loss look the same as his? His receding hairline at 30 is mine now at 17. By 60 he had massive frontal loss. His hairline was completely gone but he had really thick hair in the back.

Does this mean I'll be losing my hairline first? Is there any chance that I will lose my crown before my hairline?

My dad is 50 and he has a very good NW2 hairline. His hairline at 50 is better than mine now at 17. And he has a little bit of crown thinning. Is there any chance my balding will look like my dad instead of my grandpa?

hello povertyhairline,

unfortunately noone would be able to tell anything about it , you are basically trying to predict the outcome of a probability that could involve more than your maternal grand father and your father , male pattern baldness can skip generations you know , how would you know if yours isn't inherited from your great grandfather.

this is some very tricky subject that we have here , within the same family (even between brothers) the type and age at which the hairloss occurs can be different.

I have uncles with different hairloss patterns ,that have been triggered at more than a 20 years difference between each others' loss onset.

I can say from personal experience that patterns are not always genetic. Many people do lose their hair in the way, same pattern and similar age from their fathers/grandfathers, however many also differ so it's impossible to tell. You get people who have hair loss that has skipped a generation, or people who go bald despite their fathers having a full head of hair. Or as in my situation, you can bald in a different pattern to your relatives. My father had some sort of Telogen Effluvium or diffuse thinning (he suffered from stress, lost large amounts down the drain and got tingly feelings when wearing hats). Whereas I'm balding in a Class A pattern hair loss, so I have forelock and a lot of frontal thinning but not a lot of crown thinning for what I'd be on the normal norwood scale. So basically patterns and age are unpredictable, but can be influenced by genetics. Hope this helped.

Can you predict all the traits of a new baby before it born? Its a complex combination of genetic material from your whole family history like recessive alleles could be passed down multiple generations. I think the pattern of androgen receptors might be genetically distributed but they might change as you age so its all a process way too complex for anyone to really guess at. You probably have a higher chance of same pattern as your family though just not for sure

male pattern baldness

male pattern baldness(Male Pattern Baldness) is genetic for sure. You either have THE GENE that causes male pattern baldness or you don't. Its a 50/50 thing. Some men do, some men don't. Some men will, some men wont. That's how it goes. :freak:
