Shampoo formulators got tired of explaining that the commonly-used surfactant, SDS (sodium dodecylsulfate), is not really toxic, as used in shampoos. So they capitulated and went to a somewhat less detergent relative, SLS.

The urban legend about SDS gained traction when some marketeers realized that they could use it to sell their SDS-less shampoo formulations. Somehow this got transferred over to SLS.
