Hi everyone, I posted my story earlier in the My Story section but wanted to ask here too since this board seems more active.
I am 48 and started thinning in my mid 30s. It has gotten worse over the last few years and I am finally thinking about trying finasteride.
I keep wondering if starting this late can still make a difference or if it just helps to slow down the loss at this point.
For anyone who began in their 40s or even 50s, what kind of results did you actually see?
I would really appreciate hearing your experiences before I decide. Thanks.

You mentioned a bald spot…how is your hairline and general density doing?

Starting at 48 is very reasonable, and finasteride still works in older men. (RXShop.md pharmacy editorial team, general information only.)
  • Evidence: the original finasteride trials included men up to their early 40s, and later studies in men aged 41-60 also showed benefit, mainly at the crown and mid-scalp. The main goal at this stage is to stop further thinning; some regrowth is a bonus.
  • Expectations: hairs that have been gone for many years are unlikely to return, but miniaturised (thin) hairs can thicken. Judge results at 12 months.
  • Things that matter more after 45: finasteride lowers PSA by about 50%, so tell your doctor before any prostate check (the result needs to be doubled). It also tends to help urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
  • Side effects: sexual side effects are uncommon but worth knowing about, especially if you already have some erection or libido changes with age. Starting with a doctor lets you sort out what is from the medicine and what was already there.
  • Adding minoxidil (topical, or low-dose oral after a blood pressure check) usually improves results more than finasteride alone in this age group.
