I have been dealing with extreme scalp burning for the past 3 years supposedly brought on by finasteride. I have tried shampoos, corticosteroid, antibiotics, antifungals and different supplements but none gave me any relief. Tomorrow at the derm visit I'm going to ask for gabapentin(works for neuropathic pain). I have little hope in it but don't know what else to do.

I've had a burning scalp for over 3 years, but it has nothing to do with Finasteride. I think those of us with aggressive hair loss are more likely to get a burning scalp sadly.

Ive been losing hair since 2005 and this burning sensations developed only in 2013 after 2 to 3 months being on finasteride. God know what has caused it.

Is your burning limited to the area that's thinning? Cause in my case it's worst in the horshoe area.

I'm curious about this topic. How would you describe the burning? And would you say that the feeling is pretty constant or comes on and off during the day?

I used finasteride for a month and had this .I believe its due to inflammation .finasteride just does not work for some people .Stopped finasteride two weeks back and the sensation subsided though it get it some times in a day,but much better than when I was on finasteride.

Burning feels like acid poured on the skin, bad sun burn or simply someone ironed my scalp. Its intensity changes throughout the day with most intense in the morning when I wake up.

Im pretty convinced finasteride caused it. I was on finasteride for 2 and half years and been off for 3 months now with no change.

Hey evil locks,
I wouldn't quickly dismiss finasteride as the cause for his symptoms. If you were to talk to me, Ziggy, Dench I believe and a lot of other posters on here or BTT, we can relate to this more than you know. IF you never had burning scalp before finasteride AND you started finasteride and didn't change other aspects of your routine, then logic tells you finasteride is obviously the cause. I started finasteride early March last year. At three months precisely, the scalp sensations began. Itching, followed by pinpoint burning in my left temple and crawling feelings at night. Like clockwork, the cause of these symptoms were definite to me, because I have experienced them a few times before with Telogen Effluvium. I DON'T know if this is what is happening to you. However, do NOT underestimate finasteride's ability to induce Telogen Effluvium. Either way, burning, especially if it's substantial is NOT a good sign. Monitor it over the next couple months, along with the hair loss. If your hair loss drastically increases in the next couple of months, drop that crap and never look back. DON'T try to continue add things to your regimen to alleviate such a symptom caused by finasteride. It won't work and you'll end up like me - spinning in circles in a perpetual cluster f*ck of confusion and frustration.

So what do I do now?
I am off of finasteride since Jan 4 this year and finasteride has long left my system but still there is no change in the burning. So it's likely permanent due to androgen receptors upregulation or whatever that is called.
Well I have hair thinning where the burning is most intense. If I assume this burning is from finasteride induced Telogen Effluvium then there is hope I guess.
What is your situation now?

I still have scalp sensations... My case is hard to follow and will probably confuse you. I dropped finasteride like mid-end of jan. Then I decided to go guns blazing, and started 1)dutasteride 2)15% minoxidil W/finasteride 3) RU-10%... well, things got a little better then A LOT worst. I started to think, and think hard about what I needed and what I needed to drop. I realized that 1) I should drop all oral 5-AR inhibitors so I dropped dutasteride - nothing changed. 2) I began to think that perhaps even topical 5-AR inhibitors may be causing this in me - dropped finasteride from my minoxidil. By this point it's early march and my regiment is simply 1) RU in ethanol and PG -10% 2) minoxidil 15% cream. STILL having the strong scalp sensations. So, I drop the PG, why not? I don't need it and I think it's f*cking up my scalp.
So, currently, I am just using RU in NEOGENIC, reduced it to about 8% and 15% minoxidil with hydrocortisone. It has only been like a week on this. My scalp sensations are still there, I even posted about them a few days ago, BUT every night they SEEM to be getting better. Last night - very very minimal, I fell asleep good and today, they are not there at all. I am PRAYING this is my ticket, to at least cure my scalp issues. I am also ordering some seti from Kane, because I believe that may help my inflammation. There's my long *** story. I think you should order some RU and mix it in neogenic. I personally think it's a magical combo. The pg/ethanol burnt the **** out of my scalp. Since trying the neogenic, it's soothed it more than I can explain.

I do not have access to half of the things you have mentioned. Well, I will remain off of every hair loss med until this curse subsides.

I visited derm today and asked for Gabapentin. He said that he can't prescribe it and told me to see a psychiatrist. FML! that's another $200.
