CNBC did a study for 6 months on 5 guys who were suffering from male pattern baldness. The first guy used propecia had minimal regrowth in the temples. The second guy uses minoxidil and propedia for 6 months; he had no significant regrowth ( very disappointing results0. The third guy used viscaral (fish vitamins); he had the worst results since he just maintained his hair. The fourth guy used the laser comb and experienced regrowth in the temples and had thicker hair......But The Big Winner was the 5th guy who had a hairtransplant ; he had 1900 grafts put in the front of his head and looked awesome.. The 5th guy not only had the best results, but he also seemed the most confidnet and happy.........
Conclusion,, Stop feeling depressed and get a hairtransplant..most topical treatments and vitamins will never regrow hair. I highly recommend seeing this special. I am sure it will be replayed in the near future.

With all do respect, a sample size of 1 for each study group is TERRIBLE way to do an analysis. In fact, sample size of 1 isn't even statistically sound.

I agree.. But even so, Propecia on it's own seems to a do a good job.

you guys are missing the point.. this was an unbiased news story.. moreover, it was a comparison between the various treatments that users on this site are partaking in.. yes in a perfect news story, the sample size for each treatment would be larger. this story was visually and emotionally appealling to me.. i highly recommend watch this 40 minute investigation. it will give people realitistic goals of the various treatments.

From all I've read, 6 months of minoxidil. and finasteride. isn't NEAR enough time to tell if they work. More like 1 to 2 YEARS (and I'm beginning to lean more towards 2 years).

No, unfortunately it seems you are missing the point. :) It appears, from what you have written, that you are making conclusions (and suggesting others to do the same) on treatment efficacy from a non-scientific analysis, and worse yet, a "news" story.

It always surprises me that people use the news for this type of analysis because they water down the science so it is (as you say) more

Unfortunately, this is exactly why science reporting is just terrible in the news! The news reports turn science into "edu-tainment" which has more "entertainment" then education since the public can't deal with hard science analysis or reporting since it's "boring." :(

Now, if you are saying watch it to just learn about the various treatments and how they are supposed to work -- GREAT! I agree with that and retract my above statements :) But looking to the "report" for understanding *real* efficacy over peer-reviewed, published studies, with real statistical design and analysis is just plain incorrect. :) And, I caution my fellow forum-posters from making this jump. :(

I saw it when they first did it. They called the 5 guys the "follicle five." The plan for them was that they would keep each one of these guys on his own treatment for one year and do a checkup at the 6 month mark. CNBC should be almost at the 1 year mark and airing their final results soon because if memory serves me right, its almost been one year.

that study is absolutely worthless. propecia needs at least a full year to see its potential, and they only used one person per treatment. you could do that same study 3 times and get completely different results.

Comparing the 4 participants who used topical approaches to male pattern baldness with a man who gets a hair transplant is not really a fair comparison!

That would be like a study that compares weapons.... one is a pistol, one is a rifle, one is a knife, one is a hand grenade... oh, and the fifth is an atomic bomb. Which of the five is best? Well, the scientists say that an atomic bomb is. Really?... No sh*t, that is amazing? You don't say? Wow!

This study ignores the fact that some of us want to treat our hairloss, but don't have the time, money, or will to get surgery. Not only that, but hair transplants, as do atomic bombs, have after effects that might not be palatable for all of us.

but does this mean that the laser comb does infact regrow hair in some? or do you not even trust the doctors or whoever did the analysis??

Lets see,

6 months of propecia = $360
6 months of minoxidil = $180
6 months of propecia/minoxidil = $520
6 months of lasercomb = $360

Good hair transplant w/1900 grafts = $10,000

I dont think the study is fair.

I caught this too last night. And I agree that it is too small of a sample size, but what could have been controlled, and wasn't, was the gd doctor who evaluated their progress. He SUCKED!!! There were photos taken with the guys sitting down, bowing their heads so that they could get the top of their heads. Problem is, the next shot 6 months later, the guys wer all bowing at DIFFERENT ANGLES!! AND THE DOCTOR COULDN'T SEE THIS WHEN HE WAS EVALUATING THEM!!! What a frickin idiot, doctorage degree or not!!!

Sorry for getting so pissed, but it's one thing for the general public to be ignorant regarding these evaluations, it's another for the doctors, whose "evaluations" become the statistics we depend on to decide whether or not we use a drub, to be ignorant as well.

Peace!

Lol, nice. You know, the only way that study would have approached useful is if the five guys were quintiplets, and identical ones, at that. Now then we might actually have something to talk about. But, since we don't, I'm wasting blood flow to my fingers, so--I'll just leave it at that.
