Hey all! It's a pleasure to be speaking with you here.
You know, something like this would normally not bother me. It started when I was 23. I met this woman online and we would Skype all the time. One day she wanted to check my profile and asked me to lift my hair. When she saw my hairline, she immediately expressed disappointment and said I was going to go bald one day.
My family history has no baldness and as far as I can recall, I've had this hairline since I was a wee lad. I have a pretty big head in proportion to my body and always thought my hairline just grew to accommodate said size. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of my hairline to compare, as when I was a teen, I grew my hair out to a nice, wavy length and the hairline was hidden.
In a hotel in Florida when I was 25, I had the pleasure of catching my cowlick in a mirror while on a business trip. Since we don't see the backs of our heads too often, it surprised me to see how prominent my cowlick was. I thought I was losing hair on my crown and started to worry.
When I got home, I immediately went to get my hair cut, and my stylist laughed when I expressed my worry and said my hair was just fine, and actually much thicker than most of her clients. It gave me relief, but I never stopped wondering.
Today I got out of the shower and normally I'll brush the front of my hairline to the right. It's a habit I've had since I was a kid when I had longer hair, to keep it out of my eyes. I don't know if it was because it was wet or it was a new shampoo, but my hair just wasn't setting right. I pulled it up and looked at my temples, wondering if I'm receding and maybe that's why my hair wasn't sitting right.
Looking at the contours, it appears like it always has, but I just don't know if it's finally starting to go, or if I'm just paranoid and need to get a trim. The internet sure has a way of sensationalizing one's fears (I'm looking at you, WebMD).
Honestly, the idea of going bald doesn't bother me. What does is how I'm going to style it. I buzzed my head when I was 18 and, man I've gotta say, I do not have a head shaped for a buzz. It looks very odd on me. So if I'm gonna lose my tuft, I want to have a plan for how I'm going to get my wicked style ready for my thirties and beyond. I'm 27 today, just for some extra info. They say that male pattern baldness really starts to kick in during the mid-to-late 20s, and I have no interest in taking expensive drugs or shampoos the rest of my life, so it'd just be nice to be prepared or have reasonable expectations. Perhaps for the first time in my life I'll have to stop conforming to Corporate America and grow a bad-*** beard.
Take a look at my shots and let me know what you think! I took these after I got out of the shower and tried my best to pull all of the hair back, but some strands kept sneaking out. If these don't do it justice, I can always snap some more.
Thanks lads!
