An interesting experience

I'm a 19 year old male. Four months ago, I went to the UK's leading hair loss clinic. Many of you would have heard of them. Belgravia. My reasons for going in the first place were complicated. I had been taking a drug known to induce hair loss. When I found out that the drug could do this, I began to look for abnormalities in my hair line as well as an increase in shedding. It is hard to tell if there has been a change in either my hairline or shedding rate, but my paranoia told me that there had been. No one had made a comment to me about changes to my hair. Anyway, I went to Belgravia for a free consultation, hoping to put my fears to bed. But Belgravia did not do this. A small and rather unfriendly doctor told me that I had lost hair. Not only this, she said that it had nothing to do with drugs, and that I was damned to go bald because of my genes. Male Pattern Baldness. Contrasting this, a very friendly lady then told me that all was not lost, as Propecia was on the way to save me from the evils of hair loss... she'd just need pretty much all of my student loan in order to offer me this salvation.

If I could have physically afforded the treatment, I would have gone for it I think. Since I couldn't, I went away sulking. I didn't touch my hair for weeks, and was terrified to go and get it cut. I was just dreading the "hey, you're going a bit thin buddy" remark from the barber. However, after three months it got ridiculous. MY hair needed cutting. So I went to the barber, which leads me to the point of me writing this.

I quietly explained to the barber that I was "thinning on top a little" (very quietly, as I'd just noticed a classmate sat next to me having his haircut!) and asked for advice on a good hair cut for this problem. However, before I got this advice, the barber looked at me as if I was insane. "You have ****loads of hair mate", he exclaimed. I cringed as my classmate looked over. But even after flicking through my hair, he insisted that he could see no evidence that would suggest I'm balding. And when I said to him that the oh-so-noble Belgravia clinic had diagnosed me, he was quick to point out that they could make a lot of money out of me by selling drugs. I couldn't argue.

Now, my fears about hair loss have not gone away. The people at Belgravia could still be very, very right that I am balding, even if they are an exploitative industry cashing in on the insecurities of men and the most superficial traits of society. However, I don't think that the opinions of a barber on the subject should be completely discounted. So I guess my message to all you guys is that, when you go to get advice from these hair loss clinics, remember that some of them are scientists. However, ultimately they are a business, looking to maximize their profits. Obviously you hope that some ethical standards will be applied by these companies. However, we all know that not all businesses adhere to any such standard. To suggest that Hair Loss Clinics are any different is, in my opinion, very naive.

yep they were just trying to rip you off. Don't trust places like that for a second - total con artists

I don't know if you have male pattern baldness or not, but if you do, and you want to start taking Finasteride (Propecia), there are places where you can get it really cheaply and you won't need to stump up 'all your student loan'

these clinics will charge thousands a year, for finasteride, minoxidil and some custom shampoo, which probably does nothing.

u can get the same thing for about 1$ a day or less (prices vary depending on location and availability of generics)

sorry to put it this way, but ur a sucker if u go to a clinic, ur just paying for theyre rent, salespeople, bills etc.

No offence taken. I mean this is a company that advertises on TV and on public transport, so you'd think that they wouldn't risk public reputation for one customer (I guess roughly my way of thinking). But then I guess, who would they be held accountable to if they do wrongly diagnose a client with male pattern baldness? If in 20 years time, I still have all my hair, they can still rightly claim that they didn't estimate a time span that my male pattern baldness would take. Most men are losing their hair at varying rates, so they could just argue that I am genetically wired to lose hair, it's just a slow process. No one's going to sue them over hair loss, are they? So in a way they can keep scaring men into buying their products without risk of a backlash. Also, I guess the guys that come to them will already have fears of losing hair. So when they say "yep, it's male pattern baldness", very few will question it.

I’m actually a patient of the Belgravia Centre in London and just wanted to say that my experience of the Centre and the service provided is completely different to your experience. I first went there when I was 23 and have been a patient ever since.

I had spent around a year or two worrying about my receding hairline but it wasn’t until my hairdresser mentioned it to me that I decided to do something about it. He had been a patient there and recommended it to me. So I actually had the “hey you’re going a bit thin buddy” from my barber and as you said it’s not a great feeling but I’m so glad he said it while I could still do something about it.

In my case my hair was receding at the front and thinning at the back and the results I have seen on a combination of Propecia and Minoxidil have been exceptional. My male-pattern baldness halted and my thinner patches of hair thickened up over my two years as a patient so that my hair now looks how it did years ago. Also I’ve been really impressed with the service and in particular the way I’m treated on my quarterly check-ups. And I honestly believe that had I not been suffering from hair loss then they would not have treated me.

Yes the products are expensive but having seen the improvement at first hand it’s been well worth it given the results I’ve achieved.

I can’t guarantee it will work for everyone and I know it’s hard to take the word of someone on the internet but as a young man who was terrified of my losing my hair the Belgravia Centre has proved the only place capable of helping me take control of my hair loss and I’ve been delighted with the results.

Lots of people in my life have commented on how great my hair is looking too, including my girlfriend who’s been with me through it all. So I know it’s not just a placebo or my imagination. It really has made a huge difference.

I have no experience with Belgravia, but I went to HRBR the Hair Restoration Clinic in Blackrock Dublin. In my consultation all my doctor (also a surgeon) did was take photos of my head under bright lights and high resolutions, analyse my thinning patterns, map for minaturisation and write me a prescription for proscar and minoxidil and explain what the causes of male pattern baldness are, treatment options etc. They were very honest, they didn't try to convince me I needed anything else and said there was no need for transplants at this time, just some back in 9 months. I found them to be very straight and honest, no bull****, I trust them, and I'm looking forward to going back in a couple of months to get their opinions on my progress!

Hair loss starts at the corners (temples). Hair begins to thin gradually after every cycle of the hair follicle's life. It turns to baby hair and then someday it's gone.

i don't think the barber knows about balding. I'm sure your crown is still fine and the people at Belgravia saw your temple receding/frontal hairline thinning so you most likely have male pattern baldness. C'mon almost all westerns have it, why is it so hard to deny?

Take a look at my crown when damp. It's not balding: it's a swirl/cowlick. I bet your crown hair looks thicker and you shouldn't worry about it... yet :)

hairloss does not always start at the temples.. some people thin at the crown for years, well before their temples get hit
