Am I Starting Finasteride Too Early?

I finally got a script from finasteride for thinning hairline and light diffuse thinning on the sides. The thing is I'm not balding from my crown at all (I still have all my hair on the top) and heard finasteride doesn't really work on the hairline? These are only from a few comments I saw. Is that true? Or have people regained their hairline only using finasteride? Should I have just used rogaine?

I have not added rogaine to my daily tasks yet. I'm only on day 5 of finasteride.

This kind of worries me since I feel that I might be taking it for no reason
Most of the before and after pictures of finasteride consist of people just regrowing their crown.

My dermatologist only looked at my hair only briefly (literally no more than 30 seconds or a minute) and said "Yup classic male pattern baldness and diffuse thinning on the sides"

The primary reason for taking finasteride is to prevent hair loss. So yes now is the right time assuming you have a strong enough desire to not lose any more hair.

My hairline went from a Norwood -1 at 18 ( literally down close to my eyebrows) to a Nordwood 2 at around 27.

Matured hairline... never tried finasteride.

Kept all my hair and the same Nor 2 hairline since and I'm now 40.

Recently starting shedding a bit on top after a cycle steroids at 40.

I would strongly consider your next move. It doesn't always work, often makes peoples hair worse, and the sides can be terrible, esp for your sex life. Plus, who knows what long term damage it can cause. Do you want to rely on a daily pill? It's not something you can come on or off. Not to mention, there are far superior, and more sophisticated hair treatments coming around in the next couple years.

IMO finasteride only works on X is bunk. I wouldn't get your hopes up for regaining hair, I'm about 7.5 years in and I haven't lost anything since the day I started, I haven't gained anything back either. Some people regain hair, some of those a lot, but finasteride is King at retaining what you have.

I'm not a diffuse thinner, I think I stopped it before that. Temple recession maybe Norwood 2.5 frozen in place, so finasteride can definitely work for recession.

Rogaine is hit or miss, from the studies finasteride is far better at retaining and maybe even regrowth. But rogaine is good for regrowth in some. It didn't do anything for me, I used it for about 3 years then stopped when it was clear finasteride has halted my hairloss

Ahh I see. Off topic but have you used the same strength of Finasteride for 7.5 years? I'm on 1mg at the moment. I ask this because some people (not a lot) either increase strength or move to dutasteride.

Yes. Finasteride 1mg a mix from Costco, CVS, and God forbid before the generic I was paying out the *** for Propecia.

Always 1mg finasteride. And over the years I stopped everything else in regiment because I realized it was 90% of my holding power
