I've been noticing for a while that the hair around my crowns goes far back, I'm not sure if it's a mature hairline or a reciding hairline

WELCOME HOME BUDDY !!!

minoxidil on temples + 0.5mg of finasteride for great startup. First noticeable effect will show up after 2 months. Or even less. Have fun here! Dont mess with finasteride horror stories!

And yes. Your hairline is receding. Good looking NW2

Receding hairline and mature hairline are the same thing. Mature is just what they call a normal amount of hairloss. You are a norwood 2, and there's no telling if you'll continue to lose hair or not.

The whole mature hairline thing is a pipedream. You may as well hope you live forever if you think male pattern baldness is going to magically stop at Norwood 2 for 30 more years. Good luck there so when your bald at Norwood 5 you will know it wasnt a mature hairline but sadly you will be forever bald short of a very expensive hair transplant.
Seems to me right now you treat any hair loss as male pattern baldness because you cant regrow hair right now only prevent.

Yes I agree its hair loss and your about Norwood 2 right at the blurry line between mature hairline or it being male pattern baldness. If those are even different at all. According to some thats normal loss.

What Occulus said, it's not just temple recession characteristic of NW2, his forelock has also become more narrow as the edges have eroded away. From what little I can see if the sides I think the temple points may have taken a hit too. Density looks good though, which is a blessing! This is an NW2/3. More than 2, less than 3, which for 23 years old is definitely not good. finasteride, minoxidil immediately. Mature hairlines don't just happen in 30s and 40s though. It's very common in 20 somethings and teens and may well stay stable for decades.
