Am I going bald?

 Hello - please welcome a newbie!

I have a question. I am a 25yo male and have always have had thick dark hair. My hairdresser used to comment that my hair was so thick and that there was lots of it and that I would never go bald. There is absolutely no history of baldness in my family - all parents and grndparents etc have thick hair. I have a lot of grey which I dye and started going grey when I was 16.

I have lots of hair but I do lose a lot, although to define 'a lot' I mean I lose a good few in the bath and the end of the working day (and use a lot of hair gel too to spike my hair). I have lost hair in the bath for as long as I can remember although I think I may be paranoid about it as I am getting older.

When I put hair gel on, and I do use a bit yo make my hair stand on end or point north if you like, I can see my scalp but not in an obvious kind of thin looking way.

My point is - is it normal to lose a lot of hair everyday? I know its common to lose some but wonder if my hair is stuck down all day, the hair that I would normally lose doesn't get a chance until I run it under water and all the loose ones become free maybe?? I just don't know.

I guess I'm just putting the feelers out to say - is it normal to have quite think hair - and a lot of it - and still lose quite a bit without it noticing? Am I starting to go bald?? :freaked: :freaked:

Any sympathetic help would be appreciated.

Points to note are that I do dye my hair every few weeks using a semi-perm dye from boots (Sensations). DArk Brown - Black.

Thanks in advance.

You can lose up to 50% of your density before even noticing it.

So yeah, it's likely you're going bald.

Balding - thanks Stingray.

Thanks Stingray - I'm going to wait for a decent reply before I run down to the wig shop.

I'm not sure what you are trying to get answered here. If your hair clearly isn't as thick as it used to be (and I'm guessing it's not since you can now see through your scalp) then you are losing your hair. You could be a diffuse thinner ( meaning loss of hair everywhere on your scalp) or a classic male pattern baldness sufferer. Are your temples receding and your crown less dense? Everyone sheds, if that is what you want to know. But if you are noticing hair that is lost, then yes, you are losing your hair. If not, then NO, you are not. This isn't rocket science dude. If you are suspecting you are losing your hair, chances are that you are. If you weren't, you wouldn't even be thinking about it or caring.

As far as your attitude, that's not a good way to start off. Not many people will help someone who has a snotty attitude right from the beginning.

Um, listen a**h**, I answered the question. If you want to question my answer, please do some research before being a fuckface.

Don't ask questions if you don't want answers.

"I guess I'm just putting the feelers out to say - is it normal to have quite [thick?] hair - and a lot of it - and still lose quite a bit without it noticing? Am I starting to go bald??"

What else do you want me to say to you?

Stingray cool down.

Obviously something got him worried and posted here and obviously you gave him a good answer, but not everyone can detect one.

Not a reason to be agressive though.

I believe that although some report increased shedding as the "trigger" to start searching on hair knowledge, the main reason is their hair and scalp image. Everyone sheds.

If you started worrying about hairloss now stu, as stingray said,
it is likely.

This dude is just one of those guys that thinks it can't happen to him. I guess we were all there at one point. Face it. You are going bald. Say goodbye to the luscious locks.

what is it with you people? .. nothing in his post suggests he's balding.

nobody can diagnose you online. goto a derm. its perfectly normal to lose from 100 to 150 hair a day. balding is when your regrowth isnt in tune with your loss and your hair grows back 'thinner'. thinner in diameter...when you're thinning according to the norwood charts. maybe at the temples? the crown, the front?..

most people can see their scalp in the light when they've applied gel.

i repeat..nobody can diagnose you here..not unless you have pictures at least.

Thanks!

Thanks Sir Lagalot ! That's a big help and just what I was looking for! :)

As for Stingray - I guess I was under the illusion that this was a forum for discussing the facts of hair loss and treatments. Clearly with 2000+ posts you are god and know much more than those who log on here for some simple advice only to be told 'Yes your going bald' & 'F**k off' a**h**' etc...

I only hope I can one day achieve a status as golden as yours!

LOL

oh dear... not gonna lie Stubabyuk but you're not cool, and I don't like you one bit. You are a bit of a cocky little prick, and I would expect someone who at least knows they're balding, and thus has 2000 posts, to actually know what they're talking about. You ask for advice from people like him for a reason, and this is the thanks they get? Sarcastic remarks back on post #2? Are you joking? Get a clue buddy.

What's wrong with that? I didn't start berating you until you got pissy with me for my answer. Should I have been more sympathetic? More objectionable? Given you the answer you WANTED to hear?

No, because I don't do that. I'm concise, I'm frank, and if you piss me off, I can be a total a**h**.

If you ask the question... "I guess I'm just putting the feelers out to say - is it normal to have quite think hair - and a lot of it - and still lose quite a bit without it noticing? Am I starting to go bald??", I will answer such questions frankly and concisely. Where was the misunderstanding?

Also, grow a thicker skin. Dig the sand out of your vagina and pretend like you enjoy life. Can't get all butt hurt when someone hassles you a bit. You'll just end up losing more hair.

I haven't read the responses to your post yet, but surprisingly enough, yes ... that does happen. If your hair is glued in place all day, it will be harder for those loose hairs that WOULD have fallen out - to do so. Usually you lose hair all day long without noticing it. If you are all gelled up .... most of that will just free itself at once when you wash. Definitely something I noticed as well.

The key indicators of losing hair are as follows:

1) You honestly notice more skin showing between your hair
2) You wake up and your pillow is covered in hairs - 25 to 50 at least
3) You're typing and hairs are falling onto your keyboard as you type
4) You're in the shower and the drain gets so clogged that after 10 minutes you are ankle deep in water.

I would ignore # 1 if # 2 and 3 are not happening. Mind can play tricks. Hair on the pillow is almost a universal sign for some guys.

Guys - please cool down. I once yelled at everyone for not giving me solid answers ... back in 1998 ... on alt.baldspot .... because everyone was either clueless ... or someone made a smartass 5 word comment instead.

I got so annoyed by it that I went and made a web site. Treat eachother with respect.

Word HairLossTalk.com... however, you asked a question and didn't get the proper answer... this dude asked a question, got an answer, then got all butt hurt about it.

I understand though. I'll try to be more... sympathetic :(

HairLossTalk.com, if sleep is one third of your day(50-150 normal hair fallout) then isn't it normal that you will have lost a portion of these while sleeping?

I know its human nature to nitpick but with hair loss nothing is this exact. The phenomenon is waking up with tons of hair on your pillow when you've woken up without such a thing before. The numbers aren't as important.
