alopecia areata and male pattern baldness

I'm in such an unusual spot. I have been diagnosed with both alopecia areata and male pattern baldness. I think I initially had alopecia areata, which in turn triggered the male pattern baldness. My third (and final) physician wanted me off finasteride, but I kept on it anyway. Now, I'm convinced that the change in hormone levels is killing my hairline, and aggravating the alopecia areata.

I am at an absolute loss. I now use a compounded cortisone+minoxidil solution at night; minoxidil in the morning; and take finasteride in the morning. I am considering dropping the finasteride though. My physician has suggested that I could go off the finasteride or stay on it; said there wouldn't be any harm either way.

Is there anyone on this board with this "combination" problem? Would you care to comment?
