i've heard you have to be a minimum of 25 to get a hair transplant. Is this true? And one more question. Lets say you were a norwood 2. you get around 20 or 21. your maintaining your hair. Is it possible to get a hair transplant then ?

No because you dont know how much you will continue to lose. First you must make sure that you have halted/stabilised your hairloss also imo anytime before you reach nw3 is too soon.
You dont have an unlimited donor supply.
With hair transplant's you HAVE TO BE CONSERVATIVE and most young guys dont want to hear this they want nw1 hairlines imo you should never transplant lower than a nw2 hairline just to be safe.
Remember a hair transplant will be on your head for life that means when you are 60/70+.

but how do u actually no for sure that your hair is stabalized. of course when your hair stops falling out. but can u really know that it wont ever start up again. what if you become immune to the hair treatments your taking after a long time. or if genetically you start developing more dht as u age

s.a.f's right what he says, I waited till I was 33 before having a hair transplant, and I looked at my dad and grandads hairline to guess how much loss I was to expect

Chrish how old are you and what is your degree of hairloss on the Norwood scale? Also are you currently using meds to halt/stabilise your hairloss.

Good advice from S.A.F.

And always evaluate both sides of family history. We can be more genetically disposed to either side. For example male pattern baldness comes from my maternal side and it obviously hit me. My other two brothers still have a solid head of hair. One is 53 and one is 50. My paternal side has no male pattern baldness. My paternal granfather passed on at the age of 84, and still had a good head of snow white hair.

When? When you demonstrate consistency. Consistency with daily sheds. You may possible do this with meds and you may not. I would stay on meds for a few yrs...min 1 yr and chart your progrees in terms of new hair counts and sheds. Remember, you transplant in one area, there is a great chance hair may fall out behind it, around it, in front of it. Do you see what I am saying.

A few other ways to confirm the effectiveness of the meds are to look for the amount of lost hair on your pillowcase each morning. Be sure to clean off all of the hair on the pillowcase, and then repeat each morning. Once you notice less hair being left on your pillow, consistently, that's a good sign. Don't expect to see any changes until three months or so after initial use of the meds. I'll explain why in a moment.

Also look in the palms of your hands after lathering up shampoo on your scalp. Again, a noticable decrease in lost hair is a good sign that stabilization is taking place.

Remember one important thing. Many patients can realize sudden and high levels of shedding resulting from the initial use of finasteride or dutasteride. IMO, that's a good sign because it's verification that your hair follicles are responding to the inihbiton of DHT from the meds. They are beginning to cycle more normally again which equates to growing follicles entering telogen (shedding) and the ones in telogen back into the growing phase. So even if considerable shedding begins, there's more hair beginning to kick in.

Now and then I receive contact from men, especially the younger guys, who experience this increased shedding from the meds and their tendency is to bail out immediately. I always recommend that they listen to their doctor and give it adequate time to fulfill the inhibition period which is normally ninety days. Meaning, one can hardly fairly evaluate the efficiency of the med until the active ingredient has begun to effectively inhibit DHT.

That's just the beginning. Wait until at least six to nine months to begin to see the fewer hairs lost on the pillow or when shampooing or grooming. IMO, too many guys bail out after using finasteride or dutasteride after just a couple of months. They always say, I didn't notice anything. Or they may forget to use the meds they way it is prescribed by their physician. Probably because it is an elective decision to take the drug, not something they are required to take.

One last piece of advice on this subject. The more younger guys should never, ever decide to just start buying finasteride or dutasteride on the internet. YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELVES TO FIRST BE PHYSICALLY EVALUATED AND GET A FORMAL DIAGNOSES FOR male pattern baldness. If your hairloss is unrelated to male pattern baldness you do not want to start using hairloss meds. Or, you may potentially have other medical issues whereby these hairloss meds would not be recommended by your Doctor.

I am hearing and reading about more and more younger guys and even middle age men just suddenly decide to buy hairloss meds online without being formally diagnosed. Not a good thing. But as many of us know, there is a proliferation of drugs being pushed on the internet. Buyer beware. :freaked:

just curious lets say you start noticing it is falling out from behing the transplanted area couldn't you go and schedule a new transplant to fill in those areas? i know its kind of a dumb question but im just wondering if you can actually do that.

thanks for the response and support guys and thanks gillenator. I did go to my physician. I don't buy anything off the internet except for Dr. Lee's spironolactone. And i see my hair loss specialist every 6 months or so. He was really helpful. Dr. Pinski He assured me that the shedding i went into between 2-3 months was normal and that between 6-9 months i would actually be able to judge and evaluate my hair loss situation.

Risky! You dont want to be filling in holes each time they appear. Wait until the drugs take effect( if they do) and see how ur male pattern baldness progresses. YOU want to go into a transplant when you have a definitive balding pattern. You dont want to start patching holes when ur hair loss is not stabilized. Just chill. There is no rush to get a hair transplant. Try wearing ur hair shorter or shave it down and see how you look. You never know, that could be an option. Just be smart. Gillenator gave some sound advice. He's a veteran hair transplant poster.

LAst part was very sound advice. Also, guys have to beware of shoddy online pharmacies and the quality they are getting. I hear some negative stories about those online pharmacies from India. They hook guys b/c of the price but quality is suspect. You get what u pay for. I pay for propecia b/c I want authentic product plus I support US business.

That's right, and because the other countries are basically unregulated, one has to wonder if you're getting the real product, or an imposture.
