Here's why cause its known that propecia causes depression and smoking just makes it worse....Its a little known fact that smoking induces depression in individuals

Experienced some mild depression while on prpecia and it has since stopped when i quit smoking.......For smokers it helps if u are the minority who expereince this side effect...Before u decide to quit propecia ..try quit smoking first to see if it helps.....also a good chance to quit smoking away your life and money..

How does Propecia cause depression? Im actually in a better mood knowing that im using the best proven hairloss treatment out right now to maintain my hair. Mabye you're depressed because of your hair loss in general or your depressed that you have to take a pill everyday of your life to keep your hair. But sh*t happens and imagine what could happen if you didn't take Propecia. You would be even more depressed gauranteed. Or mabye you havent been on it long enough for you to see results from it and your not happy. Im taking the advise i've been reading about and that is to stick with Propecia for 1 year and dont think about it and get on with your life and after that then evaluate your results. I dont know but i think all these weird side effects are just in your mind and finasteride has nothing to do with it. Just my opinion.

There are studies ( I think) that prove that DHT inhibition in some people causes depressive symptoms and is reported by users too.....As for me i expereinced at times mild to moderate depression initially while on propecia and has since subsided after i quit smoking.....So i think there;'s definetly a link in the sense that Smoking may exaggerate depressive symptoms cause by propecia or even without propecia , that is if u are genetically prone to depression..

Actually, you are incorrect. Smoking cessation causes depression. Smoking is a mood elevator! Nicotine and smoking are both excellent mood moderators and brain chemistry managers.

People may also want to consider that the sadness you're feeling is a pre-existing condition. Some smokers use nicotine to self-medicate depression, either knowingly or, more often, unconsciously, as evidenced by quitting usually brings those old symptoms back to the surface.

Jus to clarify matters, I was suffering from male pattern baldness for the last 2 years before starting propecia, all the while i expereinced mostly low self esteem as i was keeping busy in these 2 years( I was in the ARMY)....but seldom had depression due to my hair loss concern but rather due to ARMY stress..Somehow i was looking forward to leaving the army and treating my hair loss condtion after that.....it only recently i left ARMY and unemployed presently and went on propecia that expereince a depression different from previously.....it felt more like medicine induced than psychological...

BTW service in ARMY for a period of time is compulsory as required by law in my country for all male citizens above 18 years of age...

re:

I have actually experienced some higher form of depression since starting finasteride about 1.5 months ago. It is really hard to pin point the source of the depression because only recently have I realized that I was losing hair. I attributed the depression to the fact that I was losing hair at a young age and was upset about it. I think everyone on this board has some form of depression/anxiety over their hairloss, that is why they are hear. However, I certainly feel like it my depression has been enhanced since starting the finasteride. Of course, since I started the finasteride and realized I was balding, I think about my hair (or lack there of) constantly so I am guessing that is the source of my depression.
I do think this thread has value and would like to see if others may have felt some sort of depression after starting finasteride.
As a general comment, I believe it is possible for a number of strange symptoms to come into play now and in the future for all finasteride users. We are effecting a chemical in our body that performs so many functions. it is scary, but I do think the side effects in almost all cases are small and the risk/reward is worth it for me at this point.

That study involving finasteride and depression are pretty limiting. I would wait before some better evidence and studies surface.

what u said makes sense..cause u see it seems that after starting finasteride, u know for a fact that u become dependent on finasteride in the future to maintain your sanity all because of some little long black bastads..And dependency usually translates to powerlessness...A sense of power which u had before male pattern baldness is somewhat missing now......so u go into a state of depression cos if this denial....The finasteride somehow got u to realise this issue whcih u never did before starting finasteride even though u were having male pattern baldness>...

To me it's pretty simple - Losing hair = Depression. Once your hair stabalises and you possibly get some regrowth you will find it lifts.

Unless you suffer from a chemical inbalance in the brain that causes depression, its all in the mind.
