Hey all,

19yo college student, male pattern baldness on both sides of family. Dad went bald at 35, mom's father went bald at 30. My 26yo brother has a 'mature hairline' with no crown thinning.

About six months (January 2013) ago I noticed thinner hair in my temple regions, but, like many of us, I played the denial card and didn't think much of it. In March I realized the temple thinning was progressing, and I started using Rogaine for about 3 weeks, 2x a day. I began an initial shed, and this led me to see a dermatologist in April. After speaking with him, I stopped using Rogaine (didn't like it/became afraid of seeing the hair shed) and I started using finasteride on April 5th.
In the 2.5 months that I've been using finasteride, my hair has become substantially worse--I'm beginning to worry. My crown has thinned to the point where I have a very large cowlick--thinning around the cowlick, as well--and there is diffused thinning all over the hair line. When my hair is wet, you can see my scalp at most parts of my head, not just the typical male pattern baldness regions. Before I started meds I only noticed thinning at my temples, but ever since starting the meds my crown has thinned way too fast.
I also went to the dr for a physical, but there was nothing out of the ordinary: normal thyroid levels, normal cortisol levels, etc.

Here's my question: If this is a shed phase that I'm going through, will the finasteride. regrow the hair that I had at the beginning of treatment, or should I hop on Rogaine to help fill in this lack of density? I'm also worried about the rogaine shed that may commence once I start. I had a very full head of hair at the beginning of my treatment, and I just want to return to that stage for a few years.

If anyone can just give me some reassurance that finasteride will lead to hair re-growth, I'd love to hear it. I'm not looking for miracle work here, just growth to return to where I was in March.

Many thanks guys!
Best,
Scott
