Hi pretty standard this but i'd really appreciate advice / thoughts
I'm 32 and at fairly early stages of male pattern baldness, i've got receding hairline which i can live with but over the last year or two i've noticed my hair thinning in the area above my hairline and running up to my vertex or whatever its called. e.g when wet i can see my scalp a bit and i think i have just a hint of a bald spot coming. so i recon things could change quick for me over next 2-3 years.
for some guys this is no big deal but loosing my hair in these areas REALLY would not suit me. i would go from good looking guy to pretty unattractive. I'm single and this would affect my confidence and happiness a lot. i'm also a chef trying to open a restaurant and so want to focus on that not worry about getting married / getting old quick etc etc. i dont want to think like that!
i've got thick hair so i'm ok for now but i've really noticed a difference in the last year and feel like now is time to do something about it if possible!
I read up about minoxidil and finasteride....and concluded i dont want to risk messing with my sexual health, so started minoxidil about a week ago. but having read further since it seems minoxidil is pretty temporary solution and i maybe i should consider finasteride if i want to keep what i've got and maybe improve a bit and it be more sustainable.
So! i've got few questions:
a) ideally i'd like to do minoxidil over finasteride because of concerns over sides, but am i right in thinking there's very little chance of that helping me keep my hair longer term and not turn into a bald weasel??? could i make this work for 5 or 10 years if i'm lucky or is that pie in the sky? is the sensible approach to keep up minoxidil and if it works then avoid finasteride altogether??
b) or should i stop minoxidil (i really would rather not do both minoxidil and finasteride thanks!) and start finasteride, if so whats the min dose i could start on to get results (i dont need miracles i just would love to halt what i can see happening, and maybe inch back a bit if possible ) while minimising the chance of side affects? i'm guessing getting on it is a long term commitment, so i need to be ready to take it into the future
n.b from reading i get that the thing to do is get off it if you start experiencing side affects, and hope they are not permanent!
c) Nizoral shampoo - is it worthwhile? the chat on the (non-forum) part of this site is so strong for it that it seems like whoever wrote it has shares in the company....is it a no-brainer that i need in my shower from now on no matter which route i choose? or is it a bit of a side thought?
in general i dont like the idea of messing with my hormones, but i'd be over the moon if something could stop my hair loss while not ruining my sex life. i'm not the type to invent side affects when they are not really there though, so paranoia induced sides shouldnt be an issue!
basically its stick with minoxidil vs change to finasteride (and add that shampoo?) vs take it on the chin!
advice and help would be much appreciated!
Thanks
Andy
