Hey everyone.

Besides from swisstemples, is there anyone who has seen actual growth from castor oil to a level that is noticeable through photos?

His regrowth is not just from castor oil. He does and takes quite a few more things than that. Check his blog.

You're unlikely even maintenance from castor oil alone, much less regrowth. It is just a piece of the puzzle.

I have no idea if it is actually helping or not, but I'm giving it a shot both orally and topically. I have the stuff on my head for 6-8 hours a day, as I am at home most of the day right now coding so I don't give a fvck. I leave it on that long to make it absorb, because I don't wanna use DMSO or any of that junk. So if 8 hours ain't enough for it to absorb then it's probably not worth using it topically anyway. I have more faith in the oral dose anyhow.

Not to the best of my knowledge, the only evidence we have is SwissTemples' anecdotal report which isn't even sound because he is using a myriad of other treatments.

Notcoolanymore is actually right to post the David Tennant laughing GIF, since castor oil's effectiveness in regrowing hair in those with Androgenetic Alopecia is still just a theory, we have no clinical studies regarding its use in treating Androgenetic Alopecia. That being said, it is a good theory as PGE2 and similar compounds such as bimatoprost are reported to stimulate hair growth and castor oil activates 2 out of the 4 prostanoid receptors that PGE2 activates.

The logic behind the use of castor oil, besides its effectiveness in increasing PGE2 expression, is the fact that it's notoriously inexpensive. $10 AUD for a 473 mL bottle @ 1 mL orally per day will last you well over a year, it's a good deal for something that may very well be effective because it's easy to take and you don't have much to lose.

If you notice it has done nothing after that 1 year of use, oh well, you've only wasted $10. There certainly are worse experimental treatments for Androgenetic Alopecia.

As Captain Hook wrote, there is evidence that oral Castor oil does increase PGE2. (At least in rats and guniea pigs.)

Excellent links mate.

As well as the posted studies by Robo, we also have the archaic use of castor oil being used to induce labour in humans (as it is one of the oldest pharmaceuticals in existence), a largely prostaglandin-mediated phenomenon. Such an outcome wouldn't be possible if castor oil had no effect on EP prostanoid receptors.

Dinoprostone (naturally occurring PGE2) topical gel is one of the current medications for the aforementioned indication used in hospital, along with intravenous Syntocinon (oxytocin), which induces labour via a direct mechanism upstream from prostanoid signalling.

It should be worth noting however that topical castor oil doesn't have any clinical studies pointing to its effectiveness in inducing PGE2 expression, this is all just a theory for now. Therefore only oral castor oil can be absolutely recommended.

Yes, you can bank on the oral dose, if anything. Even after 8 hours of sitting on my head there is still a lot of oil there, so I am not sure how much of it actually gets absorbed.

I have read absorption is better when mixed 1:1 with a lighter carrier oil like coconut oil or any other. I have mine with Gooseberry oil or with pumpkin seed oil both of which are good for the hair in themselves. In addition I have infused them with saw palmetto berries and dried nettle root for maximum punch. It will be impossible to tell whether these are having any effect on its own as I am on the Big 3 anyway.

Castor oil is a well known natural remedy that has been used topically and orally for centuries. I suspect that if it worked it would have been reported long time ago as it is not a rare or unknown product.

I recently tried this since it was on sale cheap. What a royal pain in the *** to use. Its super thick, sticky, and makes your hair look greasy/thinner. Its like the opposite of what you want to do everyday as some routine, and I dont know if it even penetrates or does anything anyways. Not worth the effort IMO but everyone is different. Not much evidence for it either in terms of proven results are there?

It's an absolute pain to apply at night even. I keep procrastinating because I don't want to deal with the stickiness and the mess it will make of my pillow., definitely not a long term solution.

Why don't you take it orally? There's no way I could be arsed with the viscosity of the topical application.

This. Not to mention it's more potent when taken orally as this is how it was formulated to be taken by various pharmacopeias for its original indication (catharsis).

Well, in terms of ingesting, I know 2mL is the max without it having laxative effects. But just wondering if this is safe to consume:

The one I have has this on the label

Pure Castor Oil
Net 7flOz (200mL) BP/USP
Pharmaceutical Grade

It is yellowish translucent in color. And I believe you guys said mix it in a glass of water and drink it? Appreciate the help.

The laxative dose is somewhat individual I would say. I've taken up to a full teaspoon without any kind of effect.
