Accutane Hair Loss

Has anyone here heard of hair loss or thinning as a side effect of taking Accutane (Isotretinoin)? I just finished my second 5 month treatment, and this past month have noticed signifigant thinning in my hair. I am not sure if it was the Accutane, or the stress I am going through applying for colleges? Regardless of how I lost my hair, my main question is this. If I have noticed it only in the last month, and never before, is there a good chance that it could grow back on its own? I am 18 years old, and my father didnt start mild balding untill about 40 or 45.
Thanks

I believe it would cause hair LOSS, not thinning.

Is your dad bald? Your grampa? anyone else in your family? It's unlikely (though not unheard of) that accutane will have caused you to shed, but if you want to make sure, stop the drug immediately to see if it alleviates within the next 2-4 months. You could see a doctor too.

I took accutane about 4 years ago. One of the side effects listed is possible hairloss. But it would be hard to tell if that is what your case is a result of. I dont think you want to stop the accutane treatment as it would halt the progression you have made towards the acne problem. However I was told that if you lost hair while on accutane that it would grow back after the treatment was completed. On a more positive note, accutane worked wonders for me, my skin cleared up wonderfully and i couldnt be happier with that. But now i have to deal with this f*****g hairloss thing... Best of luck......later

I was also considering Acutane and it had a ton of possible sides that concerned me one was hairloss the other was liver damage. Yes, It can cause hairloss.

I'd rather be bald than have a pitted and bloody face the rest of my life. Accutane was a wonder drug for me. It was hell, but it was WELL worth it. 4 years later and not more than a couple zits since then... and just little ones at that. I welcome being a chrome dome if it means having a smooth face. You can always look good with a shaved head and some whiskers... you look like a dirty *** mongrel when you got the pizza face. (I can say that, cuz I used to be one :))

Accutane hairloss should be diffuse, and not concentrated in the male pattern baldness regions (front and crown). I went on it a couple years ago, but didn't notice any hair thinning. Best thing to do is talk to your derm. to get a clear diagnosis.

I agree with stingray, its a wonder drug... The liver damage aspect is monitored through blood tests so you can stop the drug before any real damge is done.

Screw those useless dermatologist….All they do is charge crazy fee for their appointment with them. I get more useful information from you people. I just want to say thanks to our message board veterans staying with us and giving us useful information…
I just can’t wait for hair cloning to became a reality; this hair loss really got me into depression

Hair thinning is a reported side effect from Accutane, yes. Contrary to internet hyperbole, you should find that you will recover. If not, get some Minoxidil.
