5 months on Finasteride, 3 months on Minoxidil and my hairs still getting worse

So I’ve been on both treatments and my hair has gotten exponentially worse. The temples have receded even more than what it was at the start and I’ve started to lose a lot of hair in the frontal area.

Hair has also gotten thinner overall.

Is this normal? I know some people say to wait 6 months but I’m shedding SOO much hair daily and the areas affected are gradually getting worse by day.

I attached pictures of the change since starting the regimen.

There's two possibilities.
1) the minoxidil is causing a shed which will recover in a few months
2) the loss is just progressing as it was and the treatments are having no effect but because you're on treatments you are taking more notice of it.

Are you counting hairs shed each morning or judging this purely from an aesthetic point of view?

I’m able to pull out around 10 strands of hair a day, but not specifically in the mornings. Aesthetic-wise, it’s super obvious as I wasn’t even losing hair in the frontal area before and now its clear as day that its receding/thinning when I pull my hair back

There’s also gaps between the front and the top middle of my head which leads me to believe that the frontal area is going to disappear comparable to the “It” clown hairline lol...

The good news is that 10 hairs a day is literally nothing compared to most 'sheds' on here.
I can empathise how frustrating and depressing it is to go through this especially when on the treatments. Did you start them both at the same time? If so, maybe you should have tried finasteride first and given that a run before going with minoxidil too. Then you could monitor its effectiveness independently.

Only regular photos from the same angle and lighting will tell you whats happening

I started Finasteride 2 months prior to starting Minoxidil actually haha. I purchased a dermaroller, but haven’t used it yet as I’m REALLY iffy on needles.

Would it be fine to start that once a week?

Also, I plan on leaving updated pictures every two weeks on here so you guys can see the results. Not sure if theres a different section to post updates as I’m brand new on this site.

edit: Took a shower earlier today and had a hair ball by the end of it... guessing it was way above just 10 strands of hair balled up smh...

Man if you are going all in with finasteride and minoxidil add the dermaroller for sure.
One positive is that you look like you have an advanced forelock which normally bodes well for treatment response.
Best of luck, keep photos updated

yeh i mean juliasbell be careful with such light hearted comments, some people seriously get depressed with hair loss esp at an early age. Plus fina can cause depression. Dont add to someone's already dispare and be tasteful/supportive, save the jokes for the pub/mates. i get the humour but have you seen how depressed some get here?

rabbit - Whats your age mate? you could just be naturally more pre-disposed to hair loss, in which case what you're doing is not strong enough to combat. minoxidil/fina both cause shed, i got scared by this years back but now add it in along side zix and am seeing alot of growth. im happy so far although nothing substantial, i feel atleast if you are limiting hair loss, its a good start.

try microneedling too. worst case go see a specialist but if left pic is old and new pic is right = progress. if vice versa, i can say i had this too years back hence i stopped. pretty early days still so either stop if you're freaking out, try a more porgressive approach or ride it out and maybe add needling and give it time. Might still just be shedding but look for regrowth

Hi,

I appreciate the response. Sorry I didn’t respond a lot earlier, I’ve been offline for a while.

Anyways, my hair has gotten even worse than what I posted on this thread. I can post an updated picture if you or anyone else is interested.

I’m on the same regimen, and my frontal area has been horrible this past month; there’s now hair loss in-between the very front of my hair and the top (signifying that the front might completely go bald eventually). I’ve been wearing hats literally everywhere I go because of this.

I’m not sure if the medications are working honestly, if a shed takes this long, then I guess I can keep waiting. I’m worried it could just be speeding up the hair-loss instead of having it shed and recover as many say the medications do.

Again, I can post an update of the “progress” if interested.

What answer do you want honestly?

If you shed then you shed

Do you believe that propecia and minoxidil will make you bald MORE?

Just trying to see if anyone else took as long as me before seeing positive change

I was in a similar situation. I switched from finasteride to dutasteride and from topical minoxidil to oral minoxidil. Best decision I've made. So perhaps wait it out for longer and if it just gets worse, consider what I did.

Do I need a prescription for dutasteride? And so, you take both medications orally?

You can get dutasteride from certain sites online or a prescription. I use a site called medicalwellnesscenter, you pay them 50 bucks and they will send a prescription for it to your local pharmacy. And yea its a pill. Same with oral minoxidil.

It's very hard to predict what finasteride will do for you in the long run. Most likely, it will regrow your hair, but there are people who continue to shed and hairline continues to regress. As some people pointed out, continual regression may be due to your hair loss progressing, but there may be exceptions. For me personally, I've been on finasteride + minoxidil for 1 year and I have lost ground on front, temple, and even sides. My crown is fuller and my existing hairs are thicker, but I have lost a lot of density, which is bizzare. I am not satisfied with my result personally, but without finasteride, my hair would have been most likely much worse.

Just like any drugs, finasteride or dutasteride works differently based on genetics. The end results are most likely going to be positive, so at this point, you probably should continue with finasteride. If you are thinking about switching to dutasteride, it's better to do it earlier than later, as there will be more shedding from switching over to dutasteride initially. In hair loss journey, it truly sucks that we cannot predict the outcome and choose the best path until we try it out.

Thanks, I’ll look into oral minoxidil as well. I tend to not be able to apply it twice daily some days.

I’ll keep at it for sure. My hairs still getting worse by the week, but I’ll wait and see sadly lol
