5 Doctors and still NO finasteride, Help finding Doctors in Toronto for Script?

Hi there, I am from Toronto, Canada and I have been to see 5 doctors over the year I have noticed my male pattern baldness. NONE of them have been willing to give me a prescription for finasteride. I have been to see 2 walk-in doctors, 1 family doctor, 1 derm, and even asked my urologist (who wasn't all that against the drug, just said he can't personally recommend it b/c his specialty).

I have received excuses ranging from common sense to utter bull****. (I have a previous post here about the DERM: http://www.hairlosstalk.com/interac...e pattern baldness-But-said-NO-to-finasteride). I am still basically a nw1 but I have a receding hairline on my left temple that continues to expand. My frontal hairs are thinning to different extents as well.

I am writing this post to ask for help from anyone in TORONTO who has been able to get a script for finasteride and who can refer me to the doctor that did so. (If a walk-in clinic, all the better, I will make the trip no matter where). I have just reached so many frustrating points. Every time I gather the courage to get a prescription the docs come up with these excuses.

For anyone not from Toronto, any other tips you have for getting a prescription?

*A key thing doctors mention is that my hair still looks *good* and I should wait longer before I do anything. And we all know that isn't optimal.

if thats the case then why dont u just get it from somewhere reliable online. I cant recommend anywhere cause i got mine on a script but if you shuffle through the pages of the forum you're sure to find something.

I am in the GTA and having trouble too. Didn't know it would be this big of a problem. I haven't found anywhere online that ships to Canada.

why dont you guys book an appointment with a hair transplant surgeon and see if he could prescribe it, i believe they'll be more willing to.

I have looked into this idea too, but most hair transplant surgeons in Toronto say on their website that we should book an app. with our family doctor who will refer us to a derm. which will be covered by OHIP. I also don't see why they would take an appointment for somebody who wants finasteride which will stop chances of becoming a potential transplant ($$$).

u shouldnt mention you want finasteride until you're in the actual office, generally a good transplant surgeon will give u finasteride considering if you're anywhere under 30 you're probably not "eligible" for a transplant anyways.

This is why most will tell you see a hair transplant surgeon as they are the most reliable to give you a script for finasteride. General physcians are the least likely and dermatologists are a toss up depending on if they know anything about male pattern baldness or not.

Man that's terrible. I've gotten finasteride from 5-6 doctors all over Canada. I would go in super well equipped with papers and everything. Treating hairloss before it happens is THE best way to do it, preventative healthcare not bull**** reactionary healthcare. I feel like the system is failing us.

Dr Harvey Shapero

Do you have personal experience with this doctor? Can you tell me a little bit about your interactions? I've googled him and he's right around the corner so I would like to meet with him.

When you say "papers and everything" what do you exactly mean? Like progress photos? befores and afters? Stats and support for finasteride?

Look for a cosmetic dermatologist.

Don't ever ever buy without a prescription.

Still no luck, aint getting responses from the repliers. I am looking into Dr. Harvey Shapero who is nearby and is labelled a cosmetic derm. But the process in Canada of having to go through your family doctor -> referral -> 3month wait, is brutal. My hairline is getting thinner recently and waiting sucks.

I asked the other poster this, but this can go out to everyone especially those in early stages where docs/people don't take your hairloss seriously. *Would printing out a finasteride fact sheet, stats, and hairloss update photos and bringing them along help? I get the feeling most doctors don't like to get told how things should be treated or lectured about it.

Yeah I know a derm that prescribed me propecia a long time ago but now I have to go to a doctor first. Im pretty sure he wont prescribe me it but next time I go I am going to ask anyway. Its not cheap or easy getting a prescription for finasteride which I hope the next treatments are OTC so I can decide myself

If you're still having problems - try Dr. Paul Cotterill. It's who I got my script for Finasteride from at aged 20 with still only minimal hairloss. He's a nice guy and a hair transplant recipient (and I think surgeon) himself. He's near University and St. George.

Sometimes life is already giving you the best outcome when you don't realize it. In hindsight we can see things more clearly. If you are having this kind of experience trying to find propecia, there just might be a reason for it.

Hey overzealous I see Dr. Cotterill offers "free consultations", was this how you got your script? I am surprised that a hair transplant specialist offers free consultations as Hash pointed out Dr. Donavon charges $250 for a consultation at his clinic.

I just grabbed an appointment with Dr.Cotterill to get the prescription, seems simple enough. Just have to wait a month.
