Agree - but its hard but I can do it. Have to get by using hair fibres otherwise i hate going out especially wind here and there always making me concious

When I workout now, I'm always wearing a cap

The hair fibers is great stuff. Essentially make up for hair and will resolve your anxiety.

Hi,

Around 14 months ago I started using Rogaine (5% foam) as my temples had started receding. I did not see much improvement so around 7 months ago I started 1mg Finasteride. The first two weeks of finasteride my libido shot up unbelievably, this then returned to normal. Things have just kept on getting worse with my hair though and I would say I have lost around 30% density at the very least. I don't really notice any side effects now except for oily skin.

I also use Nizarol and take Hair Folic vitamins. I have an appointment coming up with a Hair specialist who will look at it under the microscope - would this show if I have much hope for regrowth?

My plan is to continue to the 12 month mark and see how things are then - I guess this would be sensible before I considered anything else more drastic (PRP/hair transplant) I am quite concerned by how thin it is now though so any reassurances or advice much appreciated!!

Many Thanks :)

I take Finasteride 5 ml orally nightly for a year. Everyone is different. My severe hair loss slowed and stopped at 3 months after beginning Finasteride. Gradient regrowth began soon after and was strong at 6 months. At a year in, hair is back to full thickness. I was prescribed Finasteride for prostrate problems but as you know is prescribed also for hair loss. I also went through chemotherapy and radiation therapy for cancer. The higher dosage of Finasteride has some fatigue and sexual side effects which can be mitigated somewhat by night doses and male testosterone enhancers. For me the health and hair results are worth the side effects. However, I have read recently, that side effects do not vary in intensity due to dosage strength, but rather individual reactions to the medication. I will have to corroborate this with my doctor that prescribed this medication as he is a well respected leader in his field. I will pose this question to him Monday and post his answer on this thread.

Yes I believe so, but I don't really know much about it all - I've been reading these forums for months. Should I carry on with what i'm doing? 7 months in Finasteride now and it's the past couple where it's visably thinner.
I had fairly immediate results, though it seemed painfully slow at the time. At 6 months I really had noticeable regrowth. At 12 months it's back to shaggy, long and curly. At 59 no grey yet either. Not anxious to get it cut. A luxury to have it back. Because my hair loss was severe, ratty and immediate, I became a hat guy. Now I sometimes forget until I look in the mirror, (I had stopped doing that.) that after I shower and towel dry my hair I just have to "finger style" it and go and leave the hat on the hook. There is hope my friend. I just wish I knew about this great forum a year or six months ago. But I can offer my experience and support.
My doctor prescribed 5 ml Finasteride for prostate problems because Finasteride doubles as a prostate medication. But as I said I was also suffering severe hair loss. It works for me. When I started Finasteride I also was taking Biotin supplement for 6 months, which helps hair growth. Look into more natural hair conditioners for thin or fine hair. Leave them in for a few minutes before rinsing. Also not washing your hair as often, as shampoos are detergent soaps after all. Your hair and scalp has some natural oils that need to be there. Treseme makes a curl volumiser hair creme hydrater that has Biotin in it. These are just some temp fixes that might help until the Finasteride kicks in full force. Average time seems to be 6-12 months but I have read can be longer....or shorter time span. Right around now, your time, seems to be the pivotal point.

Thank you for posting your positive experience with Finasteride. It would be great to ask your doctor as there have been studies showing DHT is inhibited at .25mg/day almost as much as 1mg/day. Would like to see what the medical establishment views that as (my assumption would be sticking with FDA recommendations).

I will ask my doctor Monday as I had also planned to ask him whether side effects are the same regardless of dosage strength. When I receive a reply I will post it on this forum. While my doctor is a respected leader in his field of micro robotic surgery in Urology, he is very intelligent and might have those answers.

I dont think there is much to say. Just do what you said, and see in 12 months how it goes. You cant avoid sides, and your never safe from them. If you take the drug to a point where you get results then your as risk of getting the sides. Its just the nature of inhibiting DHT enough to prevent hair loss.

Hi WalesUK1981 Cool title. Sounds like the name of a secret peace keeping British super submarine in a new James Bond movie. Mont here. Sorry it took so long. I had forgotten the title of your thread and I am somewhat new to this forum and at any rate I haven't totally learned how to navigate among these forums. Also I had several notifications from other correspondents while I was searching for you . But I found you, Yes! I have been working on this presentation for you for several hours. I haven't forgotten about you and talking to my Dr.
Over on this side of the pond it's a holiday and many offices are closed. Dr's day to play golf. I told my Primary Care Dr a while while ago I don't have any fun any more. (Due to sexual side effects the "Swedish finish" wouldn't happen) He said a sympathetic oh and suggested golf. I told him that was a doctor's game. (Kidding around, I play golf with my brother in law sometimes, he is podiatrist) My doctor then proceeded to dig up ½/doz v**** samples. Very nice of him!
I have a partial answer for your question about DHT and being blocked at .25 mg versus 1 mg and my 5mg dosage. The answer was from a medical site. But there was something I was unclear about and I had other questions for him. So this is the plan for tomorrow and then we can discuss what I learned. I am off work tomorrow, well ½ off ( isn't that like a British term meaning somewhat pissed (drunk) pissed over here means angry. Well I am neither of those. I have a half day work at my volunteer job. Then I will email my Finesteride prescribing Dr. our questions. I generally call someone in the nurse staff and field concise questions to the Dr. through the nurse. They may get back to me same day or next. These are more complicated questions so may have to go the email route. We will see what Nurse Nightingale says. I am also going to my pharmacist to pick up medication so I will speak to either of the head pharmacists (they still say chemist over in your neck of the woods?)and ask our questions there also. I may ask my dermatologist also. However it was my urologist who prescribed the Finasteride. Either will know, they are both brilliant.
I will post you as I receive official information-brother.
>>>Okay on to the meat of the matter so to speak.
I think this came from a Mayo Clinic site. I was up late searching through a number of med sites on my mission.
Finasteride can block the DHT with any dosage .25, 1mg, 5mg. AND can block any amount of DHT. Which is dependant on the amount of free testosterone in your system. That was not specific enough for me. So I am still going to my personal Drs and pharmacists. But that leads into another answer. You said your Libido went back to normal. Good hopefully stays that way. But Finasteride is an accumulative medication (please forgive me if you know some of this information) it has a half life also that is why it takes some time to build up in your system to become effective. So as abcdefg said you may get some of the side effects or not or may muster through them. Many of the gentlemen I spoke with, even some younger ones on low doses had sexual and/or other side effects. I was researching whether testosterone boosters would be contraindicated with Finasteride, because one gentleman I spoke with was afraid of taking them (male enhancers) and is just going without sex at the chance to get his hair back. He was afraid to mess with with his hormonal balance. Guess what, that is already happening by us taking Finesteride. By doing some conversion to testosterone it is facilitating more Estrogen to come into play, because we males also produce some of that, the female hormone. That is why women pregnant with male embryos should not take Finasteride, because the baby's male genitalia may not develop properly. My sources said the herbal Testosterone boosters like I am taking allow your own body to manufacture more free testosterone to allow- obviously sex is a big one(pun was not intended, but works- that was also not intended but yes it's working! ) also am hoping further studies to will reveal that male enhancers. combat some of the feminizing aspects of Finasteride such as gynamastia, ( male breasts, I don't have them I stay fit (I owned an operated my own gym so outwardly I am not developing breasts, but my pectoralis muscles are sore around the areolas, target zone of the side effect pain(risk of breast cancer, yes in men) and my system is already compromised, I think I mentioned I went through Esophageal Cancer, but hey I'm tough. I am not trying to scare you, just telling you stay tuned in to changes in your body other than your hair as well. It appears to me you are doing that very well. Back to male enhancers. Mine also opens vascular systems delivering greater blood flow ie oxygen and nutrients to the Male and other organs.
***Now I remember you saying you were
losing some hair now. 30%,? I remember I was still losing some even as I was growing new hair Midway through year one of the Finasteride course. Thinking back that is approximately what I lost. Front through crown.
**** Where was your hair loss? And I have read that losing some hair even to ½ way point in your treatment is pretty standard. I have read Finasteride can take rarely even up to 3 years to grow hair or just cause hair loss stop. General average is 12 months, many factors can affect this recreational substance use, hair history (perms, coloring ect. tying back hair tightly) genetics, general health, stress, accidents. My hair came back pretty quick, though it seemed slow. I don't drink or smoke or anything. Whooppie. Well I do do that.--a guy has got to have some fun.
****Generally Finasteride works in most cases. I haven't heard of a case where it didn't. I'm sure they are out there. The stated success ratios are so varied. 90% 70%, 60% 40%. I' ve seen all these figures. Who knows how wide of a portion of the population is represented in the test trials. Including ethnic/ethnic mix background. The demographics to represent a small microcosm of the male population in the test trials would be formidable. Although America is a good place for test trials because we are one of the major melting pots of the world. And from what I have learned every case is different. 6-9 months is average to stop losing hair. But some people lose and gain hair simultaneously throughout their course on Finasteride. It seems, however it works across the board.
>>>. Now an alternative, this is one that hasn't gone through FDA testing because of cost apparently (it has been reported ). So it received an C rating from the Mayo Clinic as far as FDA approval. HOWEVER. It did receive an A rating from the Mayo Clinic >>>for success for growing hair among users. And it did do test trials.
Saw Palmetto in Combination With Beto Sitoseteral . 300-400mg and 100-300 mg respectively. Side effects were similar to Finasteride but not as prevalent. Also good for prostate and keeping cholesterol down. They are both plant based. I can't find how long it takes for effectiveness. When I do I will post you. However I have read that if one ceases their course of Finasteride, once well into the regimen, all progress is lost. That is another item I will attempt to verify among my medical authorities. Despite some cautionary facts, overall Finasteride has been a Working product for me.
Feel free to say hello my friend.

A brief mention about nutrition. When I owned and operated my own gym, I put my body builders on testosterone producing muscle building food diets. Now what was I saying?

Yeah, I agree - most people say my hair is fine and I've seen specialists who say my head of hair is healthy, but to me in the mirror it's quite a lot thinner than it was just 12 months ago! It is worse at the moment though which I am hoping is just the meds kicking in. I am going to chill out about it now though and asses the situation at the 12 month mark (in about 4 months time) cheers :)

Hi Mont!

Wow that's really quite some reply!! Thank you for taking the time to write out such a detailed and informative reply.

I am just about to go and play footy (I too am very sporty - can only be a good thing!) But later on I shall reply in full - There are some very interesting points there and I am also interested in nutritional info etc. I will get back in full later!

Hi Wales UK 1981. Mont here. I found out some of our information today and compiled it for you in a post that ended up on page 2 of this thread I believe. It was a holiday over here in the States so some offices are closed. Getting more info after work. (½ day tomorrow at work) Will post you as I receive it. I see where your hair loss is now. Your hair is VERY similar to my genetic Father's hair. He lost about the same amount around age 41 due to some major stress. It stabilized naturally a year later and remained ever the same as your's is presently. He had medium fine hair. Volumisers (natural with Biotin) would help appearances until the medications are in full operation. Not that it doesn't look fine now. It looks good, but you know it as it is in it's natural state. My brother and I have hair that is thicker than my father's and actually resemble a well done late 1800s photograph of my great grandfather (father's side) My studies have shown new information that you may not necessarily inherit your maternal grandfather's hair of lack of it through X chromosome via your mother. Nor does it mean you may end up with your father's, but you could. Genetic traits can show up from ancestors more then two generations removed. As evidenced by the uncanny resemblance of my brother and I to my paternal grandfather in his youth. (Hair texture, facial features). My paternal grandmother brought this to my attention when she visited from Europe. Also I did a study in genetics by raising multiple generations of society finches over 18 years without inbreeding and carefully charting the characteristics and noted

Ha Sporty, Like that. British Suave Style. (Compliment) As to the reply. It sounded like you were Hungry Like A Wolf for information. So I gave you all I gottt Captain. Well not the nutrition list. Dont worry it is concise and user friendly - not long. Waiting for a nurse to call me back. It sounds like they are busy today. Like a Monday because missed a day. I am going to check if they have an email. I have some information too as related inherited hair traits both me, and my brother and ancestors with information that you don't always inherit your maternal grandfather's hair traits. Discuss it later. By the by, I may not always write down my sources, but I tend to like authenticate the data or make certain it comes from a reliable source when it comes to medical matters. Not that I am a sceptic...Win the game , or have fun. Talk later. ; )

Your hair looks good. But you know what it is like in it's original state. Very much like my genetic father's. He looked like James Dean. Women would practically throw themselves at him. He was true to my Mom, though.

Hello Wales UK 1981, Mont here. My appointment with the Doctor who prescribed the Finasteride was two days ago, and I picked up the written answers to my questions to my pharmacist the same day I think. I have been pretty sick and all compound side effects of the Finasteride according to my physcian and fits the medication's and my timeline. Also busy with various Doctor appointments to determine what was happening in my chest. (A hard walnut size painful tumor behind my left nipple.). Ultrasound determined it was gynecomastia. An abnormal mass but not breast development in my case. This is caused by a hormonal imbalance ie: testertosterone and estrogen imbalance. Caused by either lunesta, sleep medication but unlikely as I had been taking it for some years without incidence. Most likely side effects of Finasteride according to my physcian. As this was my latest medication and a known side effect of this medication.
This is list of the other side effects. I developed in the order I developed they manifested and it is recommended you see your physcian if you develop any of them with any intensity or persistance. Although the side effects are not common, I have been learning they are not uncommon. And for some the side effects, go away. Bear in mind I was prescribed high dose 5mg Finasteride. for prostate health and hair loss.
Also the product does deliver what it promises as far as beneficial effects, in many cases. It increased prostate health and grew back hair I lost due to anti depressant.
First I developed some sexual dysfunction, (achieving climax), different types of sexual dysfunction for different people. This I remedied with a dietary supplement geared for that. >> >> I can go more into that supplement if you like.
***Next I began becoming more fatigued with increasing intensity a few months into the finasteride, until finally of late I was very exhausted most of the time. I am not telling you this to alarm you but to alert you should you develop similar symptoms.
>>>>A few months in I stood up and started moving toward my kitchen. I was dizzy and then woke up on the floor. My General Practioner Doctor had me undergo various tests with no resolution. I finally linked it to the Finasteride and the prescribing Doctor confirmed it along with the other side effects and had me stop the Finasteride immediately. There had been more episodes of the dizziness up to that point, which I was prepared for, by the first sign of dizziness, a prelude to blacking out; I would lock my arms around some solid supporting object or gently sit down. As I recall it always happened as I was standing. (Side effect symptom) It accentuated the blood pressure loss. This could be dangerous if you were not expecting it and struck your head on a hard surface.
***Other late stage side effects were mental fog at times, loss of memory retention, irritability, severe mood swings, nausea. And I forget what else, I think that was it--that's enough!! And these are documented by other users of Finasteride besides myself. And listed among possible side effects.
Good news is that these side effects are reversable as the Finasteride leaves your system. (Up to 6 months)
>>> My Doctor presribed Avodart also known as Dutasteride. 0.5 mg as a replacement for Finasteride. I noted other fellows on this site used this medication as well as a hair loss deterrent and in some cases restored hair. I do not know what strength of Dutasteride is prescribed for hair loss. My dosage is prescribed for prostate. I will follow this post with the hair loss dosage after research. The more advanced in age the less hair is restored by Dusteride.
>>>One question answered by my medical team was that progress with prostate and Possibly hair growth gains are lost and reversed with the discontinuance of Finasteride, and once started one must remain on it lifelong to maintain gains and stop reversal.
***Dutasteride/Avodart (also used as an anti anxiety medication) can have some similar some side effects as Finasteride, (note similarity in names) but much less incidence of and intensity than Finasteride according to my live medical sources. Also side effects if manifested, most likely soon subside. As Dutasteride gradually accumulates in my system over 6 months for full strength it "should" compensate for the losses of the Finasteride as it leaves the system over 6 months, this according to one of my medical sources.
This might be considered as an alternative to Finasteride should you unfortunately manifest some of it's more serious side effects. Other fellows in these forums have also used Dutasteride successfully for hair problems. Had I linked all the side effects I would not perhaps have let them progress so far. But as my radiologist said, "Balance the medical gains versus the side effects." Obviously. In my case quality of life was and still is suffering. I was seeing no subsidance of symptoms, but rather an increase in intensity in side effects. But I did regain a healthy prostate and healthy head of hair.
>>> I went into the Finasteride free of bias with only a brief non retaining glance at the low incidents of possible side effects, only recently linking them and seem to find I am not alone.
***Another item: I had considered taking Arimidex to combat the side effects of Finasteride while remaining on it. I had read it resolved all the side effects of Finasteride, but my Doctor would not prescribe nor recommend it due to possible bone density loss side effect.

>>>OTHER ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS YOU HAD, (and I as well):(From my medical team)
** Yes, Finasteride will function to convert DHT across the board from small to large dosages.
*** Yes, stronger dosages are more effective. Not clear on quality of results or speed of results. Will pursue this further.
****Yes AND No--mixed reviews on taking testosterone boosters and male enhancers, to counter act sexual dysfunction as related to Finasteride. Not specific to the reasons why in either case. I suppose this has to with the ingredients of the male enhancers. I will research this further if possible. There may not be enough proven studies/research in this area... surely some country somewhere. French or Swiss, Swedish labs? What about dietary male supplements as I am taking, or testosterone encouraging foods that are beneficial to the entire human organism? I didn't have time to pose all of my specific questions to that particular Doctor as to his limited time with each patient, and the point of my visit was to decide the final disposition/replacement of the Finasteride. And the alternatives took the bulk of my appointment. He didn't have a patient Email site. I bring up prostate as it is an important male health issue as well as hair loss as regarding men's mental health
.>>> Finasteride is a deterrent for prostate cancer, and a treatment for benign, but bothersome prostate enlargement and as an alternative to surgery.
***I hope all things are well you and you making progress with your hair. As I said Finasteride was successful for me in the hair and the prostate department.
***Apologies for the length of this essay, but all pertinent information.

**Dutasteride Dosages For Hair Restoration.**
According the Bernstein Medical Hair Restoration Institute (robotic hair transplants and hair restoration) study 2.5 mg high dose Dutasteride superior to 5 mg high dose Finasteride in hair restoration. That Dutasteride is more efficient at converting more testosterone DHT enabling more follicle hair growth. Which seems to support other research that more free testosterone in your system to convert encourages more hair growth. Thus it could be reasonably assumed if you are taking nutrients to moderately but naturally increase testosterone levels to counter act elevated estrogen levels caused by Finasteride and allow this extra temporary free testosterone for sexual function. One study I researched did bear this out. It was not specific to which type of enhancers/booster/supplements were used. I will do more research on this subject.

According to Rudolphus in this Forum (Hair Loss Talk). Any dosage, for instance he stated 0.5 mg Dutasteride is superior to 5 mg Finasteride.

WW.bernsteinmedical.com/dutasteridevs.finasteride for details on the case study. This I found independently of Rudolphus' findings. I did like his post. You can look up his complete post by doing a search under his name in the form or press his title tag and communication directly with him and he might foreward, repody. Or direct you his post.
If you have a unsatisfactory results with your present regimen at 12 months (4 months away at the time of your writing)//you might consider looking into Dutasteride as a substitute for Finasteride bear in mind that as the beneficial effects of the Finasteride (if you experience any) fade, the Dutasteride should kick in. I have read results can begin as early as 4 months but average 6 months, but substantially more individual hairs per cm of scalp area than Finasteride and is more efficient at filling in hairline. Well take.
