ok..

hair officially looks the worst ever.

3 months on 1 mg generic finasteride and 2% ketoconazole shampoo.

the shed that started since the 10th day has subsided just the slightest...and by that i mean i clog the sink every third day instead of everyday, but even on the days i dont clog up the sink, i wake up next to hair on my pillow..i take my hand through my hair only to end up with at least 4-6 every single time. a tug-test will dislodge hair from all over my scalp including the donor area at the back which seems to have suffered the worst from the shed. I never lost hair from the sides and the back, but after starting finasteride, the sides and back seem to be as thin as the top. Whats worse is...i dont believe many have experianced this in their shedding but my hairline at the back seems to be receding upwards.

my hair seems to have recieved some sort of shock from starting the treatment and it wont grow any more. The nape of the neck is where i'm losing the most vellus-type hair at the moment. everytime i tug i end up with colourless hair. The anterior (between vertex and front) of the scalp is the thinnest but the hairloss is pretty much diffuse throughout.

I'd say, since starting finasteride, i've lost 30% density throughout my scalp. AGAIN..i am NOT blamingg finasteride for this, this is probably hair which i was gonna lose anyway, just losing it synchronously has seemed to mess up things big time. 3 months is still early right...? but what i'm worried about is the hairline at the back. anybody else lose this much hair upon starting finasteride from the back of the head?...

my temples have also receded at least another quarter of an inch in the past three months.

people who've had success on finasteride (maintaining + regrowth) ..do they still lose the normal everyday amount of hair when washing?...that is..anybody here who's better off since starting finasteride but has still lost 50-100 hair a day?..

My final question...i have a slightly out of whack thyroid. my tsh is 4.3 while my ft3 and ft4 values are midrange..so i'm borderline hypo. Could finasteride affect the thyroid in any way? or make it worse? DHT inhibition has nothing to do with a thyroid problem right? just that i've seen pics of people with the back receding upwards...and they had thyroid problems...was thinking whether the finasteride aggravated it cause i hadnt lost hair from the back before ever.

thanks for reading.

sirlagalot,
to be honest if you are NW5, finasteride alone won't help.
Add minoxidil.

i'm not a Norwood 5

i'm thinning in the Norwood-5 area..

i have diffuse thinning all over my scalp..when my hairs dry the only visable signs are the slightly receded hairline and the temples somewhat which i manage to cover since my hair is slightly long...around 3"..

fact is..i dont think at the rate i'm shedding i'll be able to maintain jack...by the time the shed stops i wont have anything left..cause my hair looks sicker'n sicker by day. it just falls flat.

It happened the same for me. Lots of hair from back and sides, and many from the top as well.

When I was at month 3 on finasteride my hair looked worst ever. I buzzed it for the first time in my life, becouse it was looking really horrible, thinning everywhere. Also the areas you mention, above neck, etc..., were very thin. Buzzing it really helped for me, It was a new look on me and people seem to like it, so it was good for overcoming the bad times. Think about doing it.

By month 4 shedding stopped, and things started to look much better around month 6, and I let my hair grow again. It was better than baseline, not much better, but enough for me, so the moral is wait and things will improve.

The bad part is that now, around month 8, I´m shedding again, lots and lots hairs from everywhere, I pull in the back and tons of hair coming where a month ago I cannot get a single one. Still, my hair is looking better than baseline, but I hope not to come back again to month 3 horror.

In the end, It´s just a matter of patience, worrying does nothing.
It´s a fact that treatments need time, just don´t panic and wait. No one has got one night miracles in this bussiness. This are two phrases that are repeated again and again, but still, they seem to be true:

Treatments need at least one year to work.

Things look worse before they look better.

Remember this and good luck, mate.

weird how things happen differently for people. Im at 4 months on finasteride and nizoral and I never had much of a shed and things just get better and better every week. I havent experienced anything bad so far with my treatment.
