Hey,

Just realized that Walmart (and target) sells spironolactone for $4. the problem is that this price is for the 25 mg pill only. I have been interested in making my own topical spironolactone, but most of the recipes call for use of ~10 tabs of the 100 mg tabs. I was wondering if anyone has tried this with the 25 mg tabs since they are now so cheap and just used 4X the number of tabs so that the dosage is correct. Did not know if these tabs have more filler, hence more problems dissolving the ground up tablets in the recipe or not. $4 for 30 25 mg tabs (750 mg total) is pretty good deal. the other problem is that you would need 40 tabs to have the total 1000 mg that is usually in the formulas.

Just curious if anyone has tried this, or if it is just too much filler. Also, I have read some posts discussing filtering out the filler with either a coffee filter or dissolving in everclear and removing the liquid (with the dissolved spironolactone), and leaving the filler behind. If I do this, how much everclear do I use. If I want to add this to a cream, do I need to then let the alcohol evaporate before adding to a cream?

yeah, you still need a prescription, it is just cheaper now since both target and Wal-mart have institued a new $4 for generic prescriptions program. Unfortunately it only covers the 25 mg tab, the other doses cost more.

Since posting this message, I found one posted by another member who weighed the 25 mg tablet and it weighed exactly 1/4th of the 100 mg tab, so I guess it has the same amount of filler as the 100 mg tablet.

It's actually not a very good deal. If you're taking 4 a day for 100 mg of spironolactone a day then that's $160 a year for 300 days at 100 mg a day.

Inhouse pharmacy will give you 300 100 mg tablets for $109, and that way you are getting 100 mg tablets and don't have to worry about filler with the sheer number of tablets you're using, etc. Just a thought:

Life is already too short with 365-day years.

Medsranch (AKA Squaremeds) has a better price (50 x 100 mg tabs at $15):

The tablets they carry are also uncoated and have about 100 mg less excipient per 100 mg tablet than the standard coated tablets. A 100 mg uncoated tablet weighs approximately 400 mg.

To the original poster: the solubility of spironolactone in ethanol is about 1.25% w/v, so keep that in mind if you filter an ethanol solution. Cosolvent mixtures of e.g., ethanol and propylene glycol can dissolve higher concentrations of spironolactone.

Thanks for the info.

Does anyone know if the meds ranch (http://www.medsranch.com/viewcart.php?prodid=5454) site is legit. $15 dollars for 50 tabs of 100 mg seems a bit to cheap to be real.

One other question, where does one get propylene glycol. Is it only available online? I was hoping to start things soon, but was unable to obtain it at a local pharmacy. (one of the posts on this forum said that their pharmacist sold them the stuff when asked). When I asked the pharmacist they looked dumbfounded (like I had asked for crack or heroin). I tried to mix my tabs with cetaphil cream and used it last night. What a horrible mess (although it didn't smell).
