Title, been on finasteride for a year & I still shed a lot in the shower, and noticed some hairs thinning.

Timeline from around 6 months ago to now. I know the lighting is different & hair is wet in the most recent two pictures but what do you guys think? Should I keep going with finasteride or switch up to dutasteride?

You have a full head of hair. I don't understand why you are taking finasteride in the first place.

Dark straight hair, plus harsh lighting / camera exposure, against light scalp can look like thinning, especially where the hair changes direction. You will see this in non balding individuals, as well as those who are losing hair. Wet hair makes the situation even worse.

Mine is the same and has been this way since my 20s - I’m 41 now with no change.

Try to see a dermatologist to establish if you’re hair is actually miniaturising. Personally, I found a hair transplant specialist to be the best.

To me, your hair looks very healthy and normal. Other than where the hair parts, it is dense.

I have a lot of experience with this too. It is very common in men with indigenous admixture and East Asians. Judging by the hair, I bet OP is Asian.

I have something similar. My hair is black and the strands are very coarse, but I have low density. Combine that with lighter skin and you will be seeing your scalp a lot under harsh lighting.

I think it causes many men to suspect balding because they see scalp in certain situations.

In my 20s, any time I was in the sun or a bar / nightclub and a photo was taken, you could see my scalp. It made me paranoid to the point I thought I was thinning, but 15 plus years on it is the same!

Dermatologists and hair transplant surgeons would conclude no issue time after time, explaining about hair characteristics, lighting etc, changes in direction of the hair.

Bizarrely, although I am caucasian, multiple barbers have commented that I have ‘east asian’ hair!

I’m 1/4th indigenous Mexican and my hair has the typical naturally spiked look that comes with it. My friends tell me I look like Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z because I’m short, my temples are pretty high and I have a pretty noticeable widow’s peak.

Hahaha, I have a very similar story. I got a cheap haircut when I was 21 from Great Clips, and the lady really screwed up my crown. I freaked out when I got home and saw how exposed my scalp was. I had never looked at it in the mirror before, and the heavy downlighting convinced me my crown was thinning. It’s actually how I joined this forum.

I ended up shaving my head and kept it that way for several months until just out of curiosity, I wanted to see how much I lost. As it grew out it dawned on me that my hair just naturally looks like that under heavy lighting. The crown looked the same as everything else. I chose to get on finasteride at that point because I never wanted to experience the anxiety of hair loss again. My juvenile hairline had melted away by the time I was 16, so I figured that probably wasn’t a good sign for the rest of my hair. Been on finasteride for 4 years.

Lol!! I’ve been in that situation many a time, when my hair is buzzed you can see scalp at the crown, especially around the cowlick - but as I tilt and rotate my head, the light exposes scalp all over my head in the same way and the area which looked thin, looks thick without direct light on it. My hair doesn’t lay flat, it grows up and out in straight lines.

i don’t take any medication, but if I felt I needed to, I would. However I still have a full head of hair at 41.

How do you find the finasteride? Assume you tolerate it well?

Your hair sounds very similar to mine. Low density, but coarse strands and high volume.

You’re very lucky to still have all your hair at 41. It’s not unheard of for thinning beyond that age, but usually that’s a sign you will never lose hair.

I have had no side effects from finasteride, and my hairline hasn’t lost any ground since I started it.
