I'm a 20 year old male and yesterday I became concerned that I might be suffering from a receding hairline and I'm not sure if I'm just being paranoid or overly-stressed or what. I've included some pictures, although I'm not sure they're good ones.

My ex-girlfriend pointed out that I had a far-back hairline in places 2-3 years ago and I'll be honest that I've not personally noticed any major changes since then, but I also wasn't looking for them either. I've always had moderately thick hair that has hung over my hairline so I don't have any photos from a few years back to compare. I've included a picture of how my hair falls naturally, and it's been about 7 weeks or so since I had it cut.

I noticed that I seem to have the dreaded M-shaped hairline that so many people point to. However, as I mentioned, I haven't personally noticed any major changes over the last 2-3 years. I don't know if it's possible to just have that sort of hairline naturally or if I've just not noticed the changes.

I'm 50/50 when it comes to parents. My father, uncle, and grandfather on my father's side suffered from some hair-loss from at least their 30s but I don't know exactly when it started. However, on my mother's side, my uncle and grandfather kept their hair. If it helps, I seem to have inherited colour, texture, style etc of my hair all from my mother's side, so I was crossing my fingers that I'd keep it too.

I don't know what suddenly got me so worked up over it yesterday but it's all I've been able to think about all day. I'm stressed already from real life issues and I'm worried that it's just going to keep bothering me until someone can take a look. If you can give me some opinions, it might at least solve the uncertainty and get me to settle on going to see a specialist or something.

Other little tidbits that might be relevant:
- No other known medical conditions.
- I have very pale skin, burn easily. Not sure if that makes thinning show up better.
- I've not noticed any additional hair being shed on pillows/clothes/in shower etc.
- As mentioned, under a lot of stress right now with exams and it has been a stressful year and a half or so in general. Not sure if that might cause it.
- I've had mild dandruff since I was in my mid-teens, if that matters.

Thanks in advance. Any advice on what to do next would be appreciated.

surely you have noticed your recession before yesterday.....get on some treatment asap if you want to save your hair.....hopefully it is just the corners of the hairline that are affected and your hair will remain that way for many years but get on treatment now.
good luck mate sorry for pointing out your fears that you're balding but i think you probably already knew that.

Like I said, I usually don't see my hairline and I've just never really thought to pay attention before. I'll make sure I speak to someone as soon as I can then. Hopefully I can get something to stifle it before it gets too much of a problem.

Thanks for telling me straight though, I think the uncertainty was what was getting to me.

no problem.....and it certainly doesn't look bad far from it but take action now and it helps that you like you're hair forward and in this style your hair looks excellent.
