Hey, my name is Zach and im a 20 year old university student living in New York City. I started noticing my hair was thinning a few months ago, then at the beginning of this summer it began to fall out, and quickly. also my individual hairs are a lot thinner and look a lot less healthy. when dry my hair looks fine, only to a very critical eye (mainly my own) can i notice anything and all i can notice is thinner individual strands, however when wet i have begun to see more and more of my scalp, which is freakin me out. I have been very depressed for the last two years, but this summer have been going to therapy and have been feeling so much better. im starting to get my self confidence back, and my sex drive, slowely but surely. (I havent been w/ a girl in 2 years, which SUCKS by the way, haha) anyway back to the important stuff. The therapy has been stressful and so have the last few years and i was wondering what, if any effect that may have on hair health and or loss, and if the lack of sex may have had an effect. I have just started working out again and three days ago began taking propecia. i eat very well, and before my depression i was an exceptional athlete. I was wondering if anyone has any comments on stress/depression/lack of sex and their effects on hairloss and any suggestions. also if anyone has taken propecia any comments on it would be nice. thanks a lot. both my father and my mothers father are bald so i know im gonna be bald too, i just would like keep my hair through my twenties at the least, ya know.

Stress and depression have some effect on Male Pattern hair loss in extraordinary cases. Do not let the myths fool you - you would have to be in a seriously life altering situation to lose hair from stresss. You're not.

Lots of sex or absolutely no sex has no correlation to male pattern baldness.

I've been on Finasteride (Propecia) for...sh*t, getting on three years in September. I've suffered no side effects during this time. I've had some regrowth in addition to total maintenance. Matter of fact, I wish I had began earlier.

Where is your hair loss - temples or vertex? If you're losing on the vertex (the classic "bald spot"), does it itch? Is it constantly inflamed?

Its not on the temples, but a large area on the top of my head towards the back, the classic bald spot has thinned out, and on the top near the front there is a fair amount of thinning. it itched for a while, but only like two weeks, not anymore though. I would say im about a norwood 2A. i have been noticing a lot of shedding lately though. today ive been typing up some stuff and from 12pm to 4pm ive lost about 20 healthly looking hairs. is that shedding? i just started taking propecia last thursday, can medically stimulated shedding start so soon? anyway thanks a lot for the post.

Your onto a good thing for sure... Proscar (propecia) has maintained my hair for sure for over 3-4 years... i think id be MUCH worse off without it.

Sex wont effect your hairloss... alot of people link sex/masturbation to male pattern baldness but its a little far fetched and i believe NOT proven. So dont stress about that... our genes are much more powerful than blowing a load once a day.

Great news your out of the depression... good work, congratulations... and now your treating hairloss with a strong possibilty of success, things are looking up. Good luck. Oh... and don't count your hairs... it won't help, but only stress you out... everyone loses hair... up to 200 a day, so in the scheme of things 20 in 4 hours isnt that bad.

I do have to say that stress WILL make your hair loss even worse, so try your very best to stay stress free. Exercise will help with that. :)
