Anyone doing this? Results so far? Sides?

Hi doctor, ive upped my dosage of proscar to 2.50 mg a day and ive seen big changes, 1 mg did the job before but stopped its effects. I think each person is different and larger dosages lower more dht levels. Any comments regarding this?

I have recently been advising some patients to increase their finasteride dose to 2.5mg (half of a Proscar pill) provided that there are no significant side effects. I make this recommendation when the drug is losing its visible effectiveness and some of the patients have reported a benefit, although it is early in my experience. You’ve already upped your dosage, but for everyone else reading this — I’m not suggesting everyone should be taking a higher dose, as it should be up to your prescribing physician. I’ve made the 2.5mg recommendation to a select number of my patients (and I have a medical history on them when doing so).

Propecia Maintenance Phase?
May 15 2009, 12:35 pm PT | Posted in: Drugs

I have been using Propecia for about 8 years. Though no measureable regrowth, I feel it slowed or haulted the hair fallout and have been able to keep what I have. I do not believe I have sufferred from any of the “male concerningâ€￾ side effects. My question is, is there a thing such as a maintenance phase? Meaning, instead of taking the 1mg tablet daily, can I take one every other day and still be alright?

Thanks

The need to take the same dose over and over again for life should continue. If you drop the dose, you run the risk of losing hair. If you do go for every other day, that’s your call to make… but I wouldn’t recommend it. Unlike your case, some patients have reported that after 5 years or so some hair loss picks up again, and in those patients I have been recommending an increase in the dose to 2.5mg each day, provided that there are no side effects. Discuss any prescription medication changes with your prescribing doctor

I have read anecdotal reports from many who--after many years on the drug--have responded to a larger dose.

After 9 years on 1.25 mg my results started to fade fast. I switched to 2.5 mg and believe I saw a difference, although nothing amazing. I am contemplating taking 5 mg a day as I tolerate finasteride well.

If I were a rich man taking finasteride, I wouldn't hesitate to take even more than that, if I thought it would work a bit better. My own personal limit that I would consider taking (based on my own subjective idea of what I would consider to be a reasonable dose) would probably be around 20-30 mg per day.

Sorry if my post exposes my meagre knowledge, but wouldn't 20-30mg per day be quite excessive? Wouldn't one just opt for dutasteride instead. Wouldn't even the most positive responder get impotence from such a dosage?

"Patients have received single doses of Finasteride up to 400 mg and multiple doses of Finasteride up to 80 mg/day for three months without adverse effects. Until further experience is obtained, no specific treatment for an overdose with Finasteride can be recommended."

Might not make sense money wise though.. =p

In addition to what "SuperMeh" just said about much larger doses of finasteride, I'll also mention that in the early stumptailed macaque studies, the animals were typically given daily 1 mg doses of the drug per kg of body weight for well over a year, with no apparent harmful effect on them. Since I weigh about 100 kg myself, that would be the same as if I were to take a dose of about 100 mg of finasteride every single day, for that entire period of time.

For years I've laughed at people on hairloss forums who seem to think that the EXACT DOSE finasteride that you take is really super-critical! You say somebody took more than 1 mg (or 5 mg) of finasteride?? Oh my god!! OVERDOSE!!! :woot: Get them to the intensive care unit of a hospital immediately, to begin life-saving emergency treatment!! Oh wait....early human volunteers have taken 80 mg a day of finasteride for three months with no problems, so never mind...

Bryan....does it make any sense to "shock" the system with a higher dose once in a while? I have been on finasteride for 10 years now and recently have increased the dose to 2.5mg. Would a full 5mg dose a week do any good?
