19 year old: Mature hairline or classic male pattern baldness?

Hi all, I am currently 19 years old. I have been on minodixil for two months now. I have been applying it to my temple regions 2x a day and on my scalp 1x a day. I have seen much less shedding in the past few weeks and am hopeful. My father did not go bald until he was about 50. My grandfather on my fathers side was bald by 40. My grandfather on my mother's side had most of his hair tip he was 50. My uncle has a full head of hair. They both had prominent mature hairlines for 20 years of their lives or more. My brother has receded but has no thinning on his scalp/vertex either. Do you guys think that a mature hairline is a real thing or is it just to make myself feel as if I'm not balding? Any help would be great!

-Chris

That isn't a mature hairline.

You're balding bro. Time to get on finasteride.

I believe that is a middle part, i should've posted a better picture, and I recently saw a doctor who claimed it was receding to a mature hairline and they can stop there in some cases. What do you think of the crown shookwun? And is minoxidil good enough to take care of it?

Just found your post shookwun.."I started balding at 16, and was a full NW2 by 18, yet it remained the same until I was 23. only started using finasteride a year n a half ago."---you are living proof a nw2 can be conserved for years.

It is very true a NW2 can remain for many years, male pattern baldness is very sporadic and extremely unpredictable. You'll see that on these forums, from the extreme diffuse thinning to the juvenile hair line hah. You'll never know what end of the spectrum you'll fall in. But you best bet is to just go with common male pattern baldness, and that is the slow grind where your hairline gradually recedes before eventually thinning. Just because he remained a NW2 doesn't mean he wasn't still loosing ground, you can be a recessed NW2.

Very true, it does however give me hope for the future and I believe the fact that I have started treatment and have seen doctors really helps my case. What do you think of my case though? Based on crown?

Any expert want to give their opinion?

Crown looks fine, your frontal region is definitely classic male pattern baldness in early stages. You could remain NW2 for a long time but you almost certainly will continue to lose ground. Perhaps slowly maybe much faster. Either way, if you want to maintain what you have then I would say almost certainly get on finasteride. Don't trust doctors or GPs, they're next to useless for male pattern baldness, go see a hair loss speacialist.

It's definitely male pattern baldness, not a mature hairline. But it's okay. We're all in this boat together. Get on finasteride ^^

Don´t get on finasteride without seeing a dermatologist. It is probably mantaining that way for years. For me you look fine, deep mature hairline but thick hair and good crown. I wish I had had that hair in my 19s.

I am not too worried about getting on finasteride anytime soon. Dr. Leonard-who in my opinion after seeing many other hair specialists calmed me the most. He elaborated on the fact that I was receding to a NW2 and how sporadic male pattern baldness could be (could stay there for years) so he recommended I hop on minoxidil. I will be seeing him again in a year because that (for the time being) should offset/prevent my male pattern baldness to continue for the time being. If it progresses at a faster rate and my crown begins to thin I will hop on finasteride. Mature hairlines can begin at the ages of 19-27 and I fall in that range so I'm trying to be an optimist but combating it at the same time.

There's no reason not to get on finasteride. If you aren't, just monitor it and make sure it doesnt get any worse. Like reevaluate every six months so it doesn't creep up on you unexpectedly like it did on me :'(

The sides of finasteride scare me. If it looks worse in 6 months (which it shouldn't because I'm on minoxidil) I'll consider it. I have a good feeling minoxidil will offset my male pattern baldness for a good amount of years. I caught it early enough to have a good fight. Maybe by the time my hair becomes "minoxidil resistant" there will be another type of treatment to cure hairloss.

It sounds like a good idea. But remember to go to a dermatologist if you can even when you have already started Minoxidil.

Finasteride is more important because it keeps your hair loss from progressing and works longer. It can work for ten years! Minoxidil will lose its efficacy in like 3 years, and then you will end up where you would be had you never done anything. Do you know what I mean? Someone bring out the chart please! lol

What if in 3 years I bump up to the highest percentage minoxidil? It only makes sense that the minoxidil resistant hairs will respond well to an increase because they are so used to it. It is like a medicine that has to be jacked up dosage wise to fight off a disease. We did a case like this in one of my courses in which patients had to increase their dosage for the medicine to be effective. I don't need the charts to understand that it will lose it's efficiency over time, but I do understand that three years is a huge window for new breakthroughs. My theory on minoxidil is that it stops male pattern baldness in it's tracks where you are losing and prevents further hairloss (keeps the follicles healthy, which "offsets male pattern baldness"). But let's say I'm applying it to my temples and crown. If in those years that I'm using it my male pattern baldness wants to advance to a NW6 (knock on wood), than the areas I'm not applying it will begin to miniaturize and then I'll be slapping minoxidil everywhere. Basically my theory on it

He is not saying he will never try finasteride, maybe in the future. Though there will possibly be new and better treatments in the near future. He is only 19 yo and in my opinion he is acting properly by being patient. He knows finasteride is more agressive and not recommended for teens as DHT is still very important for them. Also he is being adviced by a good dermatologist so he is doing it well. His plan is 3 years of minoxidil and by the time he is 22 yo and regarding his progression he will increase its dosis or maybe end up starting finasteride or maybe another future treatment or maybe he is not balding that bad and stops treatment for some time. Good decisions.

Visited Dr Leonard and he came to the conclusion that using minoxidil will help my case as of right now and using finasteride will be pointless (google him if you like, easily one of the best Dr.s in the business). He said my male pattern baldness is not at the point where minoxidil will be useless and it will only help regrow what I have lost. He said in a years time I need to go back for reevaluation. minoxidil will hopefully not fail me for that time being. I don't mind applying it everyday and my parents pay for it so it works out nicely
