19 - am I going bald??

Well, I had long hair for ages:

Cut it short recently. While using my webcam to see the back of my head after I cut it I noticed a bald patch:

Am I going bald?? Only other possibilities I could think of were maybe I cut it badly, or my dad always ruffles my hair fairly violently (longshot lol). This is really scary for me, I'm only 19, I feel like I haven't finished growing up and I'm already losing my hair. Just as my acne started clearing up too >_>.
Hairline if this is helpful, although it's always looked pretty much like this I think:

If I am, what can I do to stop it? I've read through most of the guide thing, it's fairly confusing what stuff I should be using, and I'm a poor student and most of it is really expensive!!

We both have simaler hairline's (I'm also 19 btw). I'll be honest, it is in the typical M shape of a receeding hairline, but right now you are a NW1.5. It could be a "mature hairline" and stop there, or it could keep receeding. Just keep a close eye on it, because you very well may not be balding right now, it would be pointless for you to do any treatments. You also have a few Norwood levels of hair left before it becomes a problem, so you have time to wait it out and look it over. Best of luck man, I hope we both just have mature hairlines.

Also, can you tell us if you have baldness in the family? Your father, grandparents, uncles, brothers, cousins, anybody, and tell us what side of the family they are on.

Also, go on google and look up "Norwood scale". That will give you a clearer picture of hairloss progression.

Your crown does not have a bald patch, the hair just veers off in separate ways at the crown, creating a little parting.As for your hairline, it looks better than mine did at age 11, so my guess would be no, you're not receding either. If you're noticing loss/ your hairline looks a little different, it may just be maturing, which is completely normal for non balding men.

My hairline isn't really what I'm worried about, although it's further back than most people my age, it's been like that as long as I can remember, so I don't think it is receding, just thought it was useful to include. It's the bald patch that is really worrying me.

As for family, my dad has thick black hair that grows out into an afro if he did grow it out, and he isn't balding in the slightest, and he's in his 50s. My hair is like my mums. My uncle on my mums side is completely bald, his son who is a few years older than me isn't balding at all, I think my mum's uncle went bald too, not sure about anyone else, haven't met much of my family :s.

I guess I'm III vertex but my hairline is not that far back, I just have the bald spot. Let's hope you're right, fingers crossed. Just trying to 'catch it early'


Ah, just saw your post stable, that's good news I guess I just cut it badly. I'll keep an eye on it incase there is loss, at least I have these photos to compare to later. Thanks!

^ It doesnt look like a bald spot, just hair going in different directions. Just take the hair in front of your head, push is in different directions, and you will see scalp. Thats not balding.

Since you have a bald uncle, it means you're not in the clear, but to be honest I would assume that 95% of people have at least one bald relative. Still, it means the potential for baldness is there. Don't stress about it, because right now you have a fantastic head of hair, but don't write it off either. Getting hair back is nearly impossible, but maintaining what you have can be done. Keep an eye on it, and if it doesnt get any worse then you're in the clear. If it does, and you hit say NW2, or you have visibly thinning of the crown, then get on something to try and maintain.

Hmm your hair looks like mine before I noticed any loss (age 17). If you start noticing more in the next few years(take pics) I would get on finasteride and maintain. As of now I would not as it may not be necessary. In fact if you grew it out I doubt you would notice at all.
