18M, how bad does this look?

I’m only 18, my mother’s brother went bald and my 24YO brother’s crown is going bad. My scalp is looking pretty thin as of late, especially running down the middle. How bad does this look to y’all?

Yes it is concerning according to your age but not that noticable during the social life on account of your density. I highly recommend finasteride

Do you see how some of your hair strands are wispy on the top? That’s active thinning, when your follicular units start producing single vs multiple strands. Plus with your family history, definitely second the recommendation to be preventative with medication

Finasteride is not an option for me as the risk of sides is way too high and especially at my age... minoxidil is a no go too because I hear it causes heart issues and I’ve already been having palpitations. So the main two treatment options for me are already out of question. Guess I’ll just shave if it gets too bad

risk of sides are really exaggerated bro only around 3% get sides and they will go away if you quit using (PFS is bs). also i bet 18 is old enough as long as you aren’t a late bloomer or anything, after all there are people as young as 16 getting prescribed finasteride. personally i’m 17 and have been doing finasteride for 5 weeks and i had very mild sides for the first week but they ALL went away after that. so just consider starting it because if it does end up working out for you, you’re gonna thank your past self in the future big time.

if you’re that scared about it that’s fine, just know you’re gonna have a heard time keeping hair without something that inhibits DHT like finasteride or dutasteride. it’s not a 3% chance that you are just gonna get completely fucked up and you’re dick will just not work, it’s a 2.9% chance that you might get some mild sides (which usually go away with continued use btw) and like 0.1% that some really fucked up sh*t will happen, you take more risk driving on the highway and getting in a car crash than you would with taking finasteride and getting extreme sides/ gyno.
