yo guys

i'll be 18 in exactly one month, is it safe to start propecia?
I wouldn't do that if I were you. You are still going through hormonal changes and finasteride might f*** that up. You might want to wait until your 25 or so. Just stick with the topicals. You might want to get on Dr. Lee's site. He has a lot of good topicals. http://www.minoxidil.com You can e-mail him at RichardLeeMD@earthlink.net and ask him questions. He has always responded to me pretty quick. Good Luck! :D :D :D :D :D

I think he could take it at 19 not 25. I know a couple 19 years olds who use it with no problems.

Do you have chest hair and full beard? Do you think your fully developed?

I bodybuild as well. Well if the company says its okay then go for it. I just thought since your still very young(I'm 26) that it may not be good for you. Just trying to help. Well give a try and see what happens. It may not hurt you at all. Its the least thing you can do.

Kalika, thanks man a lot.

its good to hear people care and try to help. I will admit, i am a cautious one and maybe even a bit paranoid. i do take minoxidil 2% now, and have been for about a year. my cousin takes propecia and it worked fine with no side effect and i thought that i could start takin it a month early since my body hasn't changed at all since i turned 17.

i dunno, they say they tested people from 18 to 40. i'm a month early and think its right but could be wrong. fingers crossed, hopes high.

If your hairloss is recent I would go ahead and use it.

If I where you I would use it for a full year. Then after a year I would switch to a topical dht blocker like Fluridill or spironolactone 5%.

Try this for your regimen:

Xandrox 5% daytime solution without retin -a

Nizoral 2% or Dr Lees DHT blocking shampoo =Nizoral 2%, TGEL

Nano Shampoo

You can even use spironolactone 5% even now if your losing in the front.

Keep us posted.

Dude switch to 5% minoxidil. The 2% has never done much for anybody. But I understand about the paranoia thing. I've been thinking about taking finasteride myself. Proscar would be a better choice. You can cutt the pill into 4 or 5 pieces and take one piece a day. Besides proscar is just a little more expensive than propecia but not by much. You would still be saving money bigtime. They really should greatly reduce the price of propecia since it's only 1mg per tab while proscar is 5mg per tab. It's kinda weird isn't it.

for sure kalika.

i dunno, i have a weird case. always had thin hair (moms side) but it is the typical male pattern baldness. 2% minoxidil has done wonders though, i dunno what i would look like without it. seriously i believe my body is in the 20's, plus, to be honest, i bought propecia just today with no problems. the doctor allowed it and everything but like i said, that paranoia thing...

just wanna be comfortable taking propecia in this month. hopefully no problems

peace

What ever you do don't get to paranoid. Another words don't expect or look for sideeffects all the time. The mind is a very powerful weapon. You might actually think you have side effects that aren't even there. Just relax and think happy thoughts. If you start getting bad side effects you'll know it. Just take the propecia and forget about it. For the first few weeks you might start getting better results in the gym though. Thats a good side effect. It's usually normal because your testosterone levels aren't effected by 5-alpha reductase as much: hence more testosterone. Actually the sides usually pass after using the Propecia for a while. Besides if it scares you, you can always come off of it dude. :hairy: :D :hairy: :D

Okay, I'm going to be a little controversial here and I'm sure people might disagree with me, but I have an additional suggestion for you.

If you go on the Propecia and don't have any side effects after a few months of use, I would suggest dropping the Minoxidil completely.

Now, I am just judging what your hair must look like from your descriptions above. It sounds like you have some thinning, but no real bald areas. In my opinion, Minoxidil is more of a regrowth agent for people who need MORE hair as in balding area coverage, not THICKER hair in general.

I am only saying this because I think that hair treatment can be a burden on one's lifestyle, and on one's wallet, if you take more elements of a regime than you need. You are just 18, and whatever you start now to treat your hair into the future, you are going to have to do it every day for the rest of your life! Young folks such as you who still have a full head of hair (albeit a thin head) should try a Propecia-only regime first, as taking a simple pill every day is a lot easier than taking a pill, AND going through the whole Minoxidil thang twice a day. Think about it... as the years go on, you might be going to college, you will definitely start having roomates if you do not already, you will have girls sleeping over at your place, a crazy school/work/social schedule... it is all part of the phase of life you will enter soon. I just think that it is easier to keep a regime to a pill a day if you can, as fitting Minoxidil into a typical young person's schedule might get old and embarrassing. It will also save you a lot of money that you can use to fortify your alcohol budget when you turn 21 (cough cough), and you could put Minoxidil in your hip pocket as a future weapon if in the future you need some additional horsepower?

Of course, I am also assuming that you have not been on Minoxidil that long. If you've been on it for a year or more, then you might be stuck with it. Nevertheless, quitting the Minoxidil would make you shed, but I would think that the Propecia would start energizing those follicles just about the same time the minoxidil withdrawl tosses them out.

I know it may sound strange, but if you really think long term about it and you are willing to try Propecia, I think it is the best strategy for you. Just my two cents.

Anyone else have comment, flames, agreement?

I'm pretty sure that propecia doesn't save most people's minoxidil hair for whatever reason. Maybe eventually(6 - 12 months later) they'll regrow, but it's hard to test for that. I've heard of people still going through minoxidil sheds even though they had been on propecia.

I know, Garth. I know.

But despite some thinning, the guy has a damn full head of hair and he has only been on the 2% stuff? He's not even 18.

Maybe a few months before his high school graduation might be a good opportunity to get off the minoxidil. I just don't think that 12 months of 2% minoxidil impact is worth forcing a teen in the prime of his life with a full head of hair to subject himself to 70 years plus of twice daily minoxidil hassle if a simple pill a day will work for him, possibly for the rest of his life? Do the math on how much that will cost him for JUST the next ten years. He's 18, has a full head of hair? I doubt that 2% minoxidil, for an 18 year old who has a full head of hair but has been using it for a year to combat thinning can seriously attribute prevention of BALD areas to just that alone?

Think long term. By the time he is age 25, if Propecia works for him, he might have a one pill a day lifestyle and a fantastic head of hair? And if not, then immediately add back in minoxidil 5% and whatever the 2% grew the 5% should regrow back in spades? You get where I'm coming from?

Gardener, you are my new God!

everything you said about me was completely true. All my hair IS there but you can see traditional male pattern baldness thinning at the crown and i do have just a bit of receeding corners. Heres the deal, i have only been putting minoxidil once a day because to be honest, i never really cared for it and was just using to better my situation for school. (i'm done school now and am currently in College). i did so much research on propecia that my head almost popped and knowing what i know, i didn't want to start pro. and BELIEVE i'll have severe side effects. I took my very first pill just yesterday and i feel just fine (i know its only one day) but i'll have to see what happens.

thanks for the tips
you rule!

Thanks, but nah, I'm not a God... I'm just a dirty old man.

The Prope will give you a shed at some point... as will coming off the minoxidil if you decide to quit that. So, I'd wait until you do have a shed period from the Prope, and then wait a month or so to allow your hairline to stabilize, and then phase off the minoxidil... if you decide to try a Prope only treatment program.

losing your hair is natural. Taking a pill to reduce a normal chemical in your body isn't. Breasts on men arent natural. Just because you *think* your body is done changing doesnt mean it has. Have you asked your body? "body, are you done growing?" Too bad you can't monitor your statistics in real time like you could with DFI on a car

Well, there was a time when I would post messages on this message board sharing your outlook. However, I think I've come 180 on this issue and I tend to believe that Propecia is very safe. Sure, Prope has only been around a decade or so, but people have been taking Proscar for decades, and at 5 times the strength of what is in Propecia. If this medication were causing systemic problems with patients, I don't think it would be prescribed anymore.

Before starting propecia at the age of 18 you might want to try a year of

Revivogen + spironolactone + (optional) Minoxidil.

the science has spoken.
