Hi everyone. My problems started a few days ago after talking with my bald uncle, about when he started going bald, which was at the age of 18. This started to get me thinking about how much longer my hair has left, if my hair decides to all fall out too.

I have a full head of relatively long, very thick, extremely curly hair, however after speaking to my uncle, I have noticed that I do shed a lot of hair, probably in excess of 150 hairs a day. This has started to freak me out as I can't see how I can still have a full head of hair and lose this much per day. My hairline hasn't receded at all yet, but my family on my mom's side does have a history of baldness (this uncle I spoke to is on my Mom's side.) My Dad is 50 and has hair of a similiar texture to mine, and he still has a full head of hair, except for slightly receded temples. His dad also has a decent head of hair, which has receded quite a bit, but keeping in mind he is 80.

My question is, is this level of hairloss normal, and do I have anything to worry about?
Any help would be appreciated!

You can inherit male pattern baldness from either side of the family. Dont scruitinise how many hairs you are shedding that does'nt matter at all. Baldness has nothing to do with the hairs that are shed it. Shedding is a natural part of the hair growth cycle. Baldness comes from the hairs that are not regrowing due to the follicle entering a reduced growth or dormant phase. Unless you can see changes happening on your head eg visible thinning, recession or bald patches then dont worry about it. You probably dont need to be on this forum!

s.a.f,

i'm going to disagree with you. first of all, shedding 150 hairs a day (if that's really what you're shedding) is certainly above the normal 50-100 hairs you're supposed to shed daily. and if all those people in his family have had hairloss, he CERTAINLY ISN'T WASTING HIS TIME ON THIS FORUM! i'd recommend u get propecia pills (1mg of finasteride) and split them into 4ths. that way you'll get 0.25mg of finasteride daily, which will do your body NO HARM WATSOEVER but will certainly help maintain your hair. good luck!

Firstly is he really counting every hair that falls from his head or just making a guestimate. Plenty of people with wonderful thick heads of hair will see hairs come out whenever they comb or shampoo or check their pillow etc.
Secondly look all this comes from a talk with his bald uncle he has admitted that he has no signs of thinning or receeding and his father has a full head of hair. So some of his older relatives may be losing their hair Whats the big deal? This guy is a teenager he should be out enjoying the best years of his life not sitting infront of the bathroom mirror applying topicals etc and slowly succumbing to the paranoia that we hairloss sufferers all face.
If he is losing or going to start losing his hair soon then he can always come back to the forums in a few years when he has some definate visible evidence.
Hairloss slowly but surely destroys the confidence of many young men and giving this kid ideas that he has a problem when he clearly does not is only going to have a negetive effect on his life.

Experienced posters am I right or not?

Thanks for the replys everyone. Hopefully it's only me being paranoid! I have never really noticed hairs on my pillow or on my clothes, but I think this has to do with the curliness of my hair, as I have noticed fallen hairs can get trapped amongst other hairs. I have to physically brush my hair to get any to fall out.

it's his choice, im not making him do anything. and obviously, i would never recommend finasteride for someone under 18. but be aware that u have finasteride at your disposal when things start getting bad.
