So my mum finally agreed to take me to my GP, I know I should probably be going to a derm or something, but I literally live on An island where there isn't one dermatologist specialised in hair loss. So yeah, I'm going to my GP. What are the chances he's heard of finasteride? Would he prescribe finasteride at my age? Should I bring up finasteride if he doesn't?

He/She may test your thyroid but if you do get a prescription for finasteride it will be private as it's not on the NHS, if you Google Dr Fox you can get finasteride from there.

I'd bring it up to him for sure, and recommend that he write you a script for generic Proscar. Proscar is intended to treat prostate problems and is finasteride in 5mg capsules. The brand name finasteride created for hairloss comes in 1mg capsules and is wayyyyy more expensive. You have to cut the Proscar tablets, but you save a lot of $$$

I'm in the US, and private insurers do not cover finasteride for hair loss. Propecia, (brand name 1mg finasteride) runs anywhere from $80-$110 a month (30 pills). I take generic Proscar, and pay $10 a month. I cut the capsules into two, so $10 for a 60 day supply.
