16 and desperate for finasteride

My hair loss is really bad and I'm 16, I've been told to use minoxidil. Problem is minoxidil is not as good as finasteride, and I'm wanting to start finasteride as soon as possible. I'm guessing I'm done with puberty, haven't grown for 3 years, I have a full beard (hairier than most my friends) and I'm just wondering if I can f***king start finasteride already. I'm aware of the sides but I'd rather risk it and take it rather than regretting it for the rest of my life.

Go see a hair specialist, specifically a hair transplant surgeon, and make an appointment with one as soon as possible. Find out if you can qualify to start Finasteride at your age since starting the treatment at 16 is really pushing it. There have been a few men on here every now and then who start Finasteride at age 16/17 and do well, hopefully that will be the case for you.

Even if you have finished puberty three years ago, there are still many androgen receptors that are active, like on your vocal chords, on your jaw and chin, and possibly even on your penis. I finished puberty at 14 and mine kept growing until I was around 19. Plus, it's theorized that younger guys are more sensitive to estrogen.

You can seriously end up ****ing up the way you look and are at that age. Even for me starting at 19, a lot of things changed. I don't think that anyone will prescribe it to you, and if your parents are present and a Dr explains what it does, they will probably flip.

The only hair specialist that I have visited is Belgravia (if you're from the UK, you'd know them) and of course, they are ridiculous with their prices. It is confirmed that I have male pattern baldness and it is also very aggressive. Problem is there's not many hair specialists which I can go to. Besides, what would a hair specialist do to determine if I can go on to finasteride apart from the obvious which is obviously check to see whether I have male pattern baldness or not. I'm 17 in four months so I really want opinions of users of what I should do because currently I can't decide for myself.

Thanks

If I wait any longer my hair will be completely f*cked up and I'll most likely be bald before I even get into uni. What changed for you?

I have another question, I understand that finasteride doesn't completely get rid of DHT and inhibits it, so what if i start with a lower dose I.e 0.5mg rather than 1 and then work my way up few years ahead?

You could easy get it if you wanted to but I would never recommend it for a 16 year old.

Topical spironolactone may by you some time until you're ready for finasteride.

How is a 16 year old taking finasteride different than an 18 year old? I don't see how it would ruin his health being a couple of years younger.

No you don't see, at 16 most teenagers are not fully developed, even though the OP thinks he is done with puberty he may well still be growing in some areas. finasteride will completely halt penile growth so if he is not fully developed there then he will not be for the rest of his life. There is a reason the drug was trialled and marketed for those 18 and over.

Thats the problem man, I care about my dick too ffs. I feel suicidial cos of this ****ty dilemma, wondering if topical spironolactone will actually work. I want to avoid minoxidil too as it's practically useless unless you're using it with finasteride. F*ck me I guess

Anonymous99, I first started balding at age 16 as well, and I know this is really hard to deal with. If Finasteride isn't an option for you right now, definitely give Minoxidil a shot, I was able to maintaing plenty of hair for a long time without a DHT inhibitor until I really needed to get on one. I didn't get on a DHT inhibitor for so long because I didn't know about them until I was 22, and by that time I did lose a good amount of hair, but Minoxidil saved me from being bald at 20/21 years of age.

That sure gives me some hope man but my baldness is aggressive and I'm not sure if minoxidil will be worthwhile for me, do you think I can use the liquid or what about topical spironolactone?

My baldness is aggressive too, and Minoxidil helped tremendously. If you're not aware, Minoxidil just doesn't help with hair growth, it also promotes maintenance. If you ever plan to use Minoxidil, the drug can cause a shed at first, but then the hairs that fell out will come back thicker.

About topical Spironolactone, it's practically useless really. The best anti-androgen to use topically that will maintain hair is one called RU58841. Unfortunately, you have to be 18 years of age or older to purchase that treatment, so that option may be out as well.

First just start with Minoxidil, you can use either foam or liquid version. I've used both versions and from my experience, I think both of them work exactly the same in terms of effectiveness, my preference is the foam however.

I'd go minoxidil. It's certainly a lot better than nothing and will buy you time until you're old enough for finasteride. Fair play to you looking to fight this, I know you must be going through a tough time right now mate.

The only thing I would recommend for someone your age is CB-03-01.

Thanks man I think I'll start with Kirkland minoxidil foam. Only problem is I'm diffusing all around, can I apply the foam to the middle of my scalp too? Also, if I buzz my head to say blade 2-3 can't it mask the shed at the top?

Fluridil works as well. I know that topicals are a pain. But they've been working for me. I've had good regrowth and maintenance for the last 2 years using nizoral shampoo, minoxidil, ru and fluridil. Finasterade is an effective treatment. And I've over a years worth of it on hand. But so far I haven't needed to take them. I'm 27 and I just don't really like the idea of systematically lowering my dht levels and it's a long term commitment. And I'm going to continue using a topical only regimen as long as it works for me.

This could all be BS, but what I've read is that the penis is most sensitive to DHT during puberty and then it gets less sensitive. I'm pretty sure that, at 16, you're still probably growing down there. So you shouldn't take any anti androgens at 16, even topical. If someone holds you at gunpoint and forces you, then choose topical CB / RU over an oral 5ar inhibitor. But just don't. Later if you start a 5ar inhibitor there is still a good chance you would regrow some of what was lost. I think penis size probably maxes out around 30 something, but the difference between around 19 and 35 is probably minor and might not even be due to DHT.

I would add that it probably doesn't matter whether it's legal for a minor to purchase it. People break the law frequently and ethically. The real concern is that CB or RU could go systemic even when applied topically, so a 16 year old shouldn't use it... for his own good and his sexual future.
