I never really expected myself to be here, but I thought I should probably reach out to some people who might know more than me on the topic.

So, I'm 15 years old, and about a month ago after a haircut, I noticed that I could see to the scalp of my head when I lift my head up when looking at a mirror. I also noticed that the hair around my temples was getting unusually thin. A good number of the hairs in the front center of my hairline are fairly thin as well, and tend to fall down if not combed with gel/spray.

However, I was confused because it never seemed like I lost even the "normal" 50, let alone 100, hairs a day that is considered standard. People had always told me that I had a good head of hair, and the relation where baldness is apparently determined, your mother's father, was key to how you would turn out - my mother's father had never lost a significant amount of hair till he was in his early to mid 60s.

This all leaves me a bit confused, so I will turn to you folks of this forum. I can provide better pictures if needed.

And when dry, same style, sorry for the poor quality -

You are very thinned, but only you can really say whether you were born like this or not... I have a lot of colleagues at work that lived with thinning and still have a head full of hair in their 60's!

If your thinning is sudden, perhaps you've been stressed...maybe some of your hairs just went through the normal cycle and will now be inactive for 3 months before growing a new hair, eat healthy and do scalp exercises, you will be just fine.

I honestly never looked at my hairline all that much, but from the zooming in on old pictures of myself on my computer, it looked thicker. It definitely felt so about 3 months ago. Normally thinning of hair takes a bit more time than a few months, and normally some shedding would be included in that, right? I don't know. Maybe it's just some sort of hormonal imbalance with DHT that's causing it? I don't feel like I've been under too much stress or that my diet is any different than it's ever been.

The best I can do is just play the waiting game, for now.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A DERMATOLOGIST

Get a real assessment to see if this is male pattern baldness. A lot of us started thinning when we were young (17 for me), but 15 is damn early. Get a professional opinion on the matter. If you can't afford to see a MD, ask some adults you trust. Does male pattern baldness run in your family?

Don't worry man. Let's say this is male pattern baldness (the worst outcome here). Start taking generic finasteride 1mg/daily and you'll have caught it in time. You're lucky. In 10 years they'll have so much better stuff on the market for you man.

Apologies for not coming back to this sooner...

Thanks for everyone's input. I would definitely like to avoid taking any medication... not that it would be given to me, anyway, by a sane doctor.

I have to wonder if this is some hormonal thing that is causing my DHT levels to be higher? I doubt it, as such a thing wouldn't be effecting just me, and would be more public. I have noticed that my pattern of thinning is more consistent with female pattern baldness, though, than male pattern baldness. Especially since I'm thinning, or am thin, in the front center region of my hairline.

My grandfather on my maternal side is pretty thin, as is my maternal uncle. Though, they didn't start thinning a great deal until their late 40s or 50s.

I'll bring up at my next physical the matter, though my doctor isn't a specialist in the hairloss arena, maybe he will point me in the right direction, and not look at me like I'm crazy (as everyone else whom I've brought this up to has thought).
