12.5months update

12.5 months 1.25mg Finasteride.
10 months minoxidil 5%
6 months Lasercomb

My hair is offically the worst it has ever been. Without drmatch and nanogen on the temporal areas it would be very noticeable. Diffuse thinning on both temples - the right temple is worse but the left temple has suddenly caught up with it in the space of 1.5 months.

I have probably lost about half an inch of hairline and a dreaded mid-frontal notch is just starting to show a little as well.

Crown is still pretty much OK - maybe slightly thinner but only noticeable under harsh lights.

I am considering dutasteride but I am a little worried about it messing me up. I have bought some Xandrox but haven't used it yet as I don't want a massive shed off of it at the moment.

Head shaving is imminent. I bet it'll look shite though.

Any thoughts?

Did you have a period where your hair was better than baseline?

No, never.

It has basically gotten worse and worse where I have had to change hairstyles several times.

I think you gave finasteride it's fair shot. 12.5 months and no noticeable improvement? worse yet - losing ground?

Bite the bullet my brother. Make the switch to dutasteride. I've heard many people say that finasteride didn't help them - but dutasteride did.

Good luck and keep us informed.

hey man, as you have been on your current regime for a while i would suggest maybe changing things around. Think about starting the xandrox, and if you seriously dont think finasteride is working look into dutasteride or maybe spironolactone. Goodluck man...

sheeit.....minoxidil..AND finasteride ANd a laser comb...and a year down the line absolutely no help at all?...

just a question...did you go through any initial sides or shedding on treatment?..

go for a dutasteride/ozbrew/zix combo now since you have nothing to lose..

No sides at all and very little shedding. Just gradual thinning. It almost seemed as if my hair was not falling out but actually getting thinner whilst still growing.

I'm wondering if some people who don't get sides on finasteride have such high DHT levels that 1 to 1.25mg has little effect on them. It would be interesting to hear how people who initially get sides get on with it in the long term. Maybe those who don't get sides but have success have just the right DHT levels for finasteride to work without the sides?

As everyone has different hormone levels people might need to find exactly the right dose for themselves rather than taking a one size fits all dose. I don't know if taking doses quite a bit higher than 1mg a day can be dangerous, but perhaps you would have more success on a higher dose? This would obviously need some looking into though to make sure it is safe.

I'd try and experiment at this point. You're afraid to try dutasteride, maybe try amping up the finasteride to 2 MG a day. You say you haven't really noticed huge shedding, just a lot of diffusing and shrinking follicles. I'd even try Grape Seed Extract and MSM. They dilate the blood vessels to allow more blood flow and MSM (or either it was Grape Seed) is one of the few things that penetrate the blood/brain barrier. If finasteride is not working at that dosage, then maybe upping the dosage and taking a more multi-modal approach that addresses something else besides DHT.

Interesting but isn't all about inhibiting dht? My thinning isn't that bad compared to a lot of people. I started early but it just hasn't stopped or improved.

Maybe it's certain areas are just very susceptible to DHT damage. This would really mean that dutasteride is my only option.

No suicide talk please or I'll have to slap you around.

neiltom, have you been taking pictures throughout your treatments? Sometimes people are fooled to think that it's all downhill when in fact they are making progress.

I already taken 6g of MSM a day. Wave your pointers over the 'view my regimen' button.

I haven't been taking regular pictures but I can assure it's defintely worse than baseline as I just style my hair like I used to.

My hairline is almost a NW2 with diffusion in the temples. I have defintely lost about half an inch of hairline in the temporal areas, there is a mid-frontal notch starting to show as well.

I washed my hair and examined it last night. I actually think I may have receded more than I first thought, I just don't think I noticed it for a while because my hair is quite thick.

The mid-frontal notch is a thinning line that starts in the centre of your hairline - some people get it.
