I have seen small improvements throughout the 11 months, but I shed so much that they disappear. Does this mean that I'll eventually have good results if I've had minor ones here and there? The hairs on my head are darker than they used to be.

Darker hair sometimes associated with finasteride use, usually id say you should get some sort of idea of where your hair is going after 12 months but i believe people were still getting regrowth up to the 24 month mark, or maybe finasteride just isn't cutting it for you, it does for most people but you may need to switch to dutasteride. Id give finasteride another 6 months personally and see where you are at.

My crown is definitely maintained, my hairline is just crappy. But okay, i think I'll do that. I have dutasteride so i can start it whenever.

Why the hell do people propose popping dutasteride here like candy. It is much, much different than finasteride and much more potent. Such advise is frankly reckless and shouldn't be espoused here so freely.

Chill, just told him it was an option. Finasteride is enough for most.

You could have prefaced it with saying do a lot of research about the drug and then consider it only after you fully understand what it does and how it differs from finasteride.

I'd like to hear why you think it is so much more dangerous than finasteride, as I'm on it myself? I don't have any side effects on it yet, but I'd like to know what you think might happen to me.

Dutasteride has a much longer half life and blocks much more DHT than finasteride. Dutasteride also inhibits both Type 1 and Type 2 5AR, whereas finasteride blocks only type 2. Type 1 is present in most tissues in the body where 5 alpha-reductase is expressed, and is the dominant form in sebaceous glands. Type 2 is the dominant isoenzyme in genital tissues, including the prostate.

I suggest you read this publication for starters: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1472916/

Here are some effects observed for type 1 deficiency, albeit in rodents: https://diabetes.diabetesjournals.org/content/64/2/447

Here is a study in humans about insulin sensitivity changes on dutasteride: 5αR inhibition with dutasteride, but not finasteride, impairs peripheral (principally muscle) insulin sensitivity, and increases body fat and leptin: https://www.endocrine-abstracts.org/ea/0031/ea0031oc1.5

The long half life is only a problem if you want to have a kid, but in reality it's unlikely to matter regardless. Finasteride does block type 1 as well, but it's 100 times more selective for type 2. Type 1 also contributes to hair loss, and it's the predominant type in the scalp, so inhibiting that strongly may be why dutasteride works so much better than finasteride.

Yeah, I've read about the possible diabetes risk, but it's a slightly increased risk if any. Nothing I need to worry about since I exercise and mostly eat right. Dutasteride has been used safely for two decades, so I think we'd know by now if there were any big and widespread dangers. Whatever small side effect risk exists is well within my tolerance when it means I don't have to be bald.

Should I start with like twice a week?
