I was on finasteride for 10+years... good success. I had good coverage and maintained decently throughout. I had a few sides to start with, but I was high libido to begin with and finasteride actually improved a few things there. Throughout the 10 years, I had sides, but I always attributed them to anxiety combined with stimulants (caffeine/nicotine) or alcohol.

Over the years, they all went away. (I quit smoking around the time I started finasteride and that helped quite a bit) I stabilized or just got used to them. Some of the ones that came up along the way were panic issues, general anxiety (started ssri a few years back to combat) some weight gain off and on, some dizziness at times (I figured it was inner ear related/vertigo), heart skip a beat (had that checked out... PVC's), elevated blood pressure, maybe gyno (not sure). Anyways... nothing debilitating... just annoying and I never attributed anything to finasteride.

Anyways... on to today... Recently, my doctor said he was trying dutasteride and asked if I was interested. I said sure, I'll give it a try. I started taking it about 6 weeks ago. Lately I've had some sides... a little scatterbrained, was pretty irritable last weekend, seems like I'm a little less libido driven (no issues). Again nothing major, but made me start reading a little deeper.

The recent rabbit hole of reading exposed me to the mechanics of 5aRI's and the impact on testosterone and estrogen. I had a decent high level understanding before, but after some lengthy reads, I think combining propecia with bad health habits (not sleeping enough, drinking more/often than I should, not getting enough exercise over the 10 years, etc) was causing an imbalance in estrogen (estradiol/esterone) to testosterone in me. This is all conjecture, but I suspect that has been causing sides to come up/go away over the years.

I've been reading up on supplements/drugs to manage this DIM and other estradiol inhibitors, Amirex, TRT, etc. I've seen people reporting success on some of these. I know people (i.e. bodybuilders) have been using these things for a long time to combat sides associated with messing with hormones. I could quit it all and go with a bald look (I have a size 8 head so this kinda worries me). I could cut out one of my life's guilty pleasures, beer. I started a fitness camp a few months back and have been going regularly 4x/week to improve my health, bp, etc. My problem is that I want to have my cake and eat it, too. I want to keep going with the hair... I figure I've gone this long... I have a better understanding of what is going on... why not give it a few more months and try and figure this thing out.

I have a few options... talk to my GP, talk to the dermatologist that is on the meds and prescribed them to me, see a specialist in the testosterone domain or try a little DIM or other aromatase inhibitor and see how it affects me.

Has anyone else had any similar experiences? Any advice on the direction/next steps? I posted in here to get opinions of people taking finasteride/dutasteride or that did at one time. Thanks in advance!

Like many others, I tried it to get better results. My doctor brought it up to see if I was interested. He had been on finasteride about 7 years when I started. He switched to dutasteride and was having favorable results along with some of his other patients so he suggested it to me. I haven't monitored closely for some time. I suspect that as I'm looking now, it has either thinned in the last month or it has been thinning for a while. Above, I mentioned gyno as a maybe... I feel like there is something there... not big or super noticeable. I'm 5'9" 220lbs medium build... it may be just fat. I just never looked for it or knew about that possibility. Regardless if I go back to finasteride (another option), I still suspect there may be an issue with hormone balance.

Personally, I wouldn't have changed to dutasteride especially since finasteride is/was working well. But I understand being greedy and wanting furthur improvement/maintenance. The thinning you are experiencing now is probably from the intial dutasteride shed which is common for people just starting the drug and the shedded hair will most likely come back stronger.

If you have sides on finasteride, they will most likely be more prevalent on dutasteride. My advice to you would be stick with the FDA approved, scientifically proven in effectiveness/safety finasteride, which has already been working for you.

How old are you, and how much hair did you lose during the years? How much is "maintained decently"?

I am 41 started finasteride in October 2005 so really 11 years now. I dug up a picture from when I started. The 6 mos progress looks are a little deceiving because my hair was too long and covering the bald spot. I'm not sure how to read the norwood charts. My forehead has receded over the years. I'll see if I can dig up something current.

Looks to me like you started taking it a bit late. Would love to see a before and after of the front and back of your hair.

Yeah... one of my bigger regrets on that was that i didn't start sooner... going back through pics showed me that I'm getting older lol... it also showed me it actually hasn't been maintaining as good as I thought, but it has been 11 years. That's probably why my doctor suggested I try the Dutasteride. If it works, cool. If not, I will probably consider going with the shaved head/stubble look. My noggin is so big tho :(

Sooo... back to my original question(s)? Anyone have any luck with DIM or other aromatose inhibitor? or anything else like that?

At my age and physical state, I should probably get some of that stuff checked out. Who would you start with? GP? Dermatologist that prescribed the meds? Testosterone specialty place?

I was checking this out at GNC earlier today... Z-Test Night time formula... it doesn't indicate the mg of DIM per dose, tho.

Anyone ever use this?

I don't see that your hair has gotten any worse over those 11 years? A hair transplant would fix that up well considering it looks like finasteride has maintained a bit.

we can't really see your crown in the 2016 pics , but it looks better . and you have maitained your front and midscalp very well . I really think this is a sucess .
if you add minoxidil you could certainly have great regrowth in the back if you are a responder .

did you have temple and hairline recession when you first tried propecia ?

You have not got aged under those ten years :), You should continue with dutasteride and get a hair transplant, it will be much better then :)

Yeah if dutasteride works even better for you after all this years, be sure to let us know!

I have seen anecdotals where men switch from finasteride to dutasteride after many years on finasteride to get further improvements and they claim it does nothing more than finasteride.

Thanks for the kind words guys/gals :)

I was using minoxidil foam for some time, but over the years, I was not consistently using it. I couldn't tell you when the last time I used it was. I still have an unopened bottle (expires this month/year). I'll will add that back into my regimen.

I did switch to dutasteride... that was about 6 weeks ago. I have noticed some thinning... like I said... not sure if that is since starting dutasteride or if it has been longer than that. I am hoping it is just a heavy shed that will come back with dutasteride/minoxidil.

Thanks Lacey... again, more stuff to look at :) Doing lots of reading on the subject opened my eyes to something I wasn't aware of/concerned with at 30. I guess I should go to a place that specializes in testosterone and have levels checked. Hope I'm not going to start lactating... lol
