hey guys. firstly, an apology..for not having used the forums for months and months, maybe 4 or 5 months. when i first joined and people said that those who were experiencing success didnt use the forums anymore, i didnt believe it. but its true - when its all going well, you dont think about hairloss half as much as when youre in those times of trouble. still, i think i owe it to everyone on this forum for helping me out to start posting a bit more often.
background - im only 19, hairloss started very early, but started to get really noticeable when i was maybe 17 turning 18. i had a fair amount of diffuse thinning all over the scalp, and pretty much no recession at the temples when i started treatment.
i started on finasteride 1 year and 2 months ago. for the first one or two months of treatment, my hair got a little bit worse - more thin all over, and little 1cm type bits of recession in each corner.
over the course of the last 1 year and 2 months, especially during the first 9 months, it was certainly a rollercoaster ride. i had sheds and regrowths - some really obvious, and some that may have just been in my head. i remember around month 3, my hair being so so bad that even when i combed it flat, and with highlights, u could still see all the way through to my scalp. but then a month later, i was over the moon to see the same thing did not happen.
even around 2 months ago, i thought, sh*t, my hairline is thinning more than ever before. this was just a little dip, but over the last 2 months my hairline has thickened up a bit. this shows that, for me, propecia is still working even though im past the 1 year mark.
i was on nizoral for a few months in the middle of the treatment. ive not been on it for quite a few months now, but want to get back on, because i heard it has the same effect for regrowth as minoxidil 2% 1x per day... think it was in a study posted on this forum.
i did have a blip in my treatment, where i stopped finasteride for 1 month. this was around the 10 month mark. so effectively, i missed a month and have only had 1 year 1 month of treatment. my hair didnt actually change that much in this month, maybe thinned a tiny bit. but i wouldnt have liked to have left it any longer.
i can honestly say that before i started treatment, i was losing my hair SO rapidly. literally, 80% of the fallout happened within 4 months. i went from having a fairly full head of hair, with minor, generally unnoticeable thinning, to having hair that could only be seen as "full" if it was styled in a certain way and highlighted.
now, my hair is the same or better than it was when i started treatments. im really happy about this, and its improved my self confidence. when im chatting to a new person or an old friend im not thinking about if theyve noticed my hairloss or not. my temporal recession has only gotten a tiny tiny bit worse - maybe 3mm or something!? and in over one year, this loss really doesnt bother me. i can style my hair in ways i couldnt before.
what gets me most is this.. a year ago, i used to compare myself to some friends and think, hes only got a tiny bit of hairloss, but id much much rather have his loss than mine. but now, when i see a lot of those same friends i think, sh*t, their hairloss looks a lot lot worse than mine now. finasteride really has held it together for me. and being someone so young, who had such aggressive hairloss, it goes to show that everyones in with a chance with it. and im glad i didnt jump on the minoxidil yet. because if a year down the line, things go down the pan, i can up to dutasteride then, and then go to minoxidil 5%, 10%, etc. got all the guns left in the battle.
thanks v much for your help guys!!!
