1 month on Rogaine = Hairline receding further?

I started Rogaine Foam one month ago. I use it on the frontal/hairline area, extending over the top of my scalp towards the crown.

Here's my hairline one month ago:

Here it is 5 minutes ago:

Its been one month, and I've noticed nothing really. Theres been a lot of shedding, but, its gone down a bit. Now it just appears that my hairline's back even further.

I mean, I knew it doesn't stop the balding process, but, I didn't think it'd do nothing whatsoever except speed up my hair loss. I mean, what the hell is that? A Norwood 3? I thought I was a NW2 before, but, I can't tell anymore.

Thoughts?

They say that the shedding from rogaine is supposed to last for a little while and then you see regrowth later on (maybe in a another couple of months? - i don't really know).

But I've used rogaine and I think it may have made mine worse - despite what everyone tells me. That's why 'm barely using it now...just on the very very frontal corners where there is just fuzz left because i'm scared to put it on any more healthy hair in case it ruins it.

Stick with it buddy!

Mine was exactly the same as this and I came close to stopping 1 month in. I'm now comming up for two months. My hair is shedding significantly less hairs and my hairline looks to me like it is filling out again.

I can't assay it will be the same for you for sure but for me it feels like there is some promise.

I am applying only to the hairline and photographing every three weeks. Will post results up once I have a few months worth and will continue to do so for a year.

Are you on Propecia? If not I would recommend considering it.

Unfortunately I'm 16, so, Propecia is out of the question at this point. I'm trying to hold onto what I've got for a few years until I can try Propecia without risk of developmental issues, though I'm sure I'll get side effects.

But, yeah. I don't know what I should try. It seems like my hairline is receding faster now that I've started Rogaine. Is it possible the rogaine like, pulls hairs out as I put it in? Because it seems like the only times I notice a lot of hairs, is when I run my hands through my hair when applying Rogaine. Other than that, shedding is barely noticeable otherwise, except maybe while Swimming.

TheEscapist, did you not read the box? It clearly states that it will only help with the vertex. In some cases in can help with regrowth in front, but it generally helps with only the vertex. Try a topical DHT inhibitor for the front.

Topical DHT inhibitors are not proven and not FDA approved.

Come on ripple-effect, you've been in the business long enough to know that minoxidil can work in the front just as well... No reason not to try it. :dunno:

Everything I've seen on here and on other sites says its worth trying in the front. Hell, my dermatologist suggested I try it in the front as well.

But that's not the point, I'm not trying to sue them or anything. I'm just trying to see if what other's thoughts are on the subject

I would keep up the minoxidil.

You can only judge improvement with time and even the it's difficult if your only maintaining.

For me month 1 was a set back in terms of shedding but coming up to two months shedding has slowed and I feel/am hoping that the minoxidil is doing no harm (and hopefully some good).

While it always says it dont work on the front hair line.... theres guys out there that have had a nice improvement or maintained/grown hair there.

But then again this is the only option (FDA approved) for hair loss, theres other treatments sure but nothing 100% so safe just yet, could be wrong on that one!

If anything id say give rogain a bit more chance.... id try foam in morning and liquid in night. Ive noticed a slight difference and few odd hairs sprouted from liquid over foam.... gonna see how it goes over the next few months.

Please read my post here to understand why FDA approval isn't everything you think it is:

It doesn't work just as well. Like I already said, you would be considered "lucky" if you experienced regrowth in the front, but generally speaking it is only for the vertex.

"Studies published in the late 1980s showed that minoxidil 2 percent topical solution could grow hair of moderate to dense thickness in about 50 percent of patients.7 Although few mature, terminal hairs were regrown, the number of fine, nonpigmented or vellus hairs was less, while the number of other hairs increased. Patients deemed this growth cosmetically pleasing, and these findings led researchers to conclude that minoxidil is effective in slowing or preventing hair loss.

These studies identified the ideal candidate for therapy as a man who has been bald for less than five years and whose bald area is less than 10 cm (4 in) in diameter and located on the vertex. Minoxidil was not useful for treatment of frontal hair loss. Men who stopped using minoxidil showed a rapid loss of the hair that was gained during therapy. By three months after discontinuation of therapy, hair counts were at or below baseline hair counts.

It doesn't really look worse to me, pretty much about the same. From all the posts I have read from many various people it seems that it will get worse before it gets better. I would stick with it 9-12 months and reassess the situation then. Best of luck to you! Keep with the updates too!
