Your fastest running mile time/ 5k time

So I just ran a 5k today in the fastest time that I've ever ran before. I ran it in 19 min 11 sec. I averaged about 6 min 18 sec per mile. I have a 5k race next Saturday so I've been training for it. I'm just curious what are the fastest mile times that you fellow HairLossTalk.com members have had?

I've juuuust started running the past few weeks... doing about 1 hour of jogging daily. How many "laps" is a 5k?

Ahh, ok. You could probably fit me in the high 20's then... Good job man. I think CCS jogs/runs quite a bit. I hope he responds.

When I'm good and ready, I'm going to do a marathon here in NYC.

a 5k is 3.1 miles, not 3.2. i ran some in high school, my best was around 17:30 for 5k, 4:45 for mile. wanted to run in college, but my school had to cut most of its sports programs b/c of katrina. so my dream of being the next alan webb (hairloss and all) is dashed. :(

astral week, that's impressive man. That's really quick. What did you do to training for 5k's?

it varied, but generally i ran about 30-35 miles a week (which is on the small side for competitve high school). most was distance, but i did intervals on the track 2-3 times a week, like 12-400s @ 75 sec with a 100 m jog in between for example. in retrospect, and as pretty much anyone will tell you, if you want a good 5k time, or even just a good mile time, you need to pile on the distance. for 5k, shoot for 50 miles a week if you're serious about it

my fastest mile was 6:09, though 6:15 was more typical. Maybe I'm around 6:30 now. My best 3 mile was 20:20, and my best 5K was 21:30 (different courses). I'm sure I could do it under 24 minutes now, but I don't run that far. I just do cycling and interval running or just the mile.

So I ran a 5k a few weeks back. I ran it in 20:10 and was kinda disspointed because the course wasn't marked very well otherwise I would have ran it in under 20. I'm thinking of doing speed intervals to boost up my endurance and speed. Any suggestions for a good speed interval workout.

if you're unhappy with your time, you should add more mileage first, that's more likely to help you. i don't know how long your long runs are, but you should run at least one 8+ miler a week, and one or two 6 mile tempo runs are a good idea in addition to whatever you're running. in terms of a speed workout to help you, i would suggest running mile intervals, like 3 @ 6:00 (which you should be able to do if you're under 20, or you will be soon). i would also recommend a bunch of 400m repeats because they'll build more raw strength, and it's also just more fun to run fast sometimes to mix it up. I would guess you would do these around 80-85 seconds for each, with maybe a 100m walk in between, although at some point you should try to jog the rest interval, but wait until you feel ready
good luck!

I never really run the mile by itself since I'm in the Army. My best 2 mile time is 13:04. Astral week, do you think 4 months is enough time to bring that to mid 11's? Currently I am running about 3 times per week, but starting today I am on a new plan where I will be running 5 days per week. 2 easy 3 or 4 mile runs, 1 longer 6 mile run, one speed work and then maybe a tempo run to get my pace and form right.

that's really impressive.

thanks. im kind of not happy with it though if i was to be honest. im trying to get in the 10's or low 11's for a two mile time. that 5:14 killed me so i know i wont be able to keep that pace for longer than a mile.

if you keep this work up then you can maybe score an 8 in a dark alley.

4 months is definitely enough time to get to the mid 11s, but you should probably up your mileage a bit. Do a long run of 8+ miles, keep up the 2 4-5 milers (but you shouldn't do them too easy), and then i would 2 interval workouts a week, like a lot of 400s and 800s. I ran the 2 mile in high school, i think my best was 10:30, and i think keeping up the mileage while still focusing on intervals is important.
That 5:14 is pretty good.

A 5:14 is very good, congrats. I'm at around 5:30 now for 3 miles. I'd like to be down to 5:14 in the next few months.
