Worries about minoxidil

Minoxidil - I'm thinking about trying it now, but before I do I want to know this:

If I use it for 4 months with or without noticeable improvement and then discontinue will I lose only what hair I have maintained or will I experience greater loss?

I see, so theoretically, I should only lose what I've gained/maintained. Can I asume that by stopping it hair that has been forced into the growth phase will fall out and restart the growth phase under a natural (and thinner) cycle, even if that hair was present before hand, but had been thickened or unchanged?

If that's the case, then I don't see anything to lose from it, I just don't want to potentially have worsened my hair faster than it would have normally progressed by quitting if I find the treatment isn't for me.
