FUUUUUUUUUUUU

Ive written this twice now and it crashed both times. So heres a short version. Will finasteride by itself be enough to maintain my hair? Based on my pics should I wait longer or jump on it right now? How hard is it to get a doctors note?

Btw Im 18 going on 19. Im going to buy the finasteride after my 19th b-day.

I will post my pics in the next post so it doesnt repeatedly crash.

God looking at these are disheartening. I know this must be a pretty bad hairline for an 18 yo but at least I can do something now.

Step 1: Stop with the obsessive worrying! Freaking out about it won't help anything, it will just consume your mind.

Step 2: Yes, propecia would be enough (in my opinion). Propecia would have a 98% chance of either stopping or drastically slowing your hairloss.

Seriously though, stop with the worrying. Your hairline is fine. Mine is worse than that (at 27) and people are surprised when they find out that I'm on propecia. "Why? It's not like you're going bald or anything..." Oh...if only they knew!!

Also, how do you know that you're losing hair? Hair on your hands when you run them through your hair? Hair in the drain catch after you shower? Give us some more background!

Thanks for the reply. Ive done it already in other topics but heres some background:

My father has a full head of hair but has slight amounts of baldness in his family. His father actually has hair too but some of my dads brothers went bald. My mom has no brothers so sadly I dont have anyone really close but my pop and all of his brothers went bald. According to my mom my pop was around a Norwood 3.5ish in his 40s and went completley bald after but he has a couple of brothers that went bald at a really young age.

Im mainly concerned because I feel like I have a higher hairline then 90% of the guys my age. Ive looked at pics of myself at 15-16 and since then Ive had clear recession. I was a nw1 back then and I think Im around a nw2 right now.

I mean you have to remember youre 27, so thats 9 years difference. In that time being a nw2 right now I could possibly be a nw4 or higher. I really just want to have no hair concernes in my 20s. I want to look young while Im still considered a "kid" in societys eyes. If I can maintain till my 40s I will be extatic.

Not saying that you'll never have hair loss, just that your current state of hair is still really good. Trust me, the only person that notices early/light hairloss is yourself and other people that are thinning/balding. I can guarantee you that your friends aren't checking out your hairline.

So, in short, if you feel that you are losing hair, then start doing some research on treatments. I'm not a doctor, so I can't tell you "Without a doubt, you must start on Propecia tomorrow!" or anything like that. I can tell you that Propecia is the only FDA approved hairloss drug, and that it regrew hair on my crown and DRASTICALLY slowed down the loss on my temples.

It's up to you to make the final choice! Just remember, it's SOOOOO much easier to maintain hair than it is to regrow!!

Thanks bro. Just to let you know your results are fantastic and inspiring. My hair isnt bad now but if it noticably gets worse I think I will jump on finasteride. Id rather be 21+ years old so Id me more developed (if Im not fully developed already). But I will take it on as it comes. Im kinda hoping that a really light dosage of finasteride each week will do the trick.

Looks like you have a fine head of hair to me. I don't get this assumption that every hairline needs to be straight. My hairline has ALWAYS gone to quite a windows peaks. It was like it at 18, my brother always joked and called me Dracula, and it is like it now at 43. My Uncle on my mother's side had exactly the same hairline and he had most of his hair when he died at 59.

Forget the hairline!

Are you kidding? Calm down, boy, your hairline is perfectly fine!
As it looks, this is your natural hairline.
But, if you say it's going worse, you can jump to propecia right now. Propecia it's perfectly safe to use over 18, no need to wait more. You can take a very low does, as you have almost no problems no.
And calm down also thinking about your hair in your 40's. Don't you see the recent advances in hair treatments going on? Propecia will be history then and there are great chances you'll have more hair in your 40's than now! :)

If you're really worried, then adding finasteride may be a good idea- however, as many others have said, your hair looks pretty good right now, and if you want to wait a couple of years, you probably can, provided you monitor its progress or lack thereof.

In the mean time, you can ease your mind to a degree by adding nizoral (or any ketoconaole containing shampoo, but i would not recommend revita, based off personal experience) in place of your normal shampoo 2-3 times a week. Massage lightly into your scalp, leave in for a few (3-5) minutes, rinse, follow with a quality conditioner...you know the drill

Ketoconazole shampoo has a relatively weak anti-androgenic mechanism, so it could be of some benefit (cutting down shedding if you shed a lot) and at least give you some peace of mind for the mean time.

Like i said, just keep an eye on it for the mean time, and it couldn't hurt to add nizoral

EDIT: if you decide to start finasteride though, id do it right and not play around with small dosages here and there

At that around 25/26 i noticed hair thinning at the crown, and then a couple of weeks after i thought i was losing it at the front as well, with a hairline very similar to the ones shown, I took a ruler and placed it parallel to my sideburns the bit closest to the face, the temple recession had gone exactly to a line parallel.

I've always said that if it ever goes behind that line i'd consider myself to be thinning at the front, 8 or so years on Propecia never went back behind that line, most likely a mature hairline.

Erm in answer to the question i think you've got a tiny bit of thinning at the front and propecia will be enough, you're catching it very very early

I'd hold off on any aggressive treatment, man. Almost everyone I know has had slight hairline recession at some point (it usually feels like its happening quickly, too), and then it seems to stop. (The only reason I'm even on these boards is because I think I'm thinning up top.)

If your hair starts noticeably thinning elsewhere, then maybe you can worry -- for now, you're fine!
