Will I go bald?

Hi all, I have an older brother and his hairline started receding just before his 20th birthday, he has been on propecia for the last year and started takin mindoxill in august. His hairline hasnt really got any worse and I think I can see some regrowth above his temples, time will tell.

I am 17 now, 18 in January and have a full head of hair. What I would like to know is will I begin to go bald at around the same age my brother did? We are really similar, people we know can't tell our voice apart on the phone ect.

I have become short sighted over the last two years and that is caused by inherited genes (my mam is very shortsighted) but my brothers eyesight is fine so is the same thing possible with baldness? Can one child inherit a gene which will cause it earlier and another not?

I'd just like to know if I am likely to go bald around 20 or earlier or later or am more likely to go bald earlier in life because my brother did? Our dad is in his fifties and is completely bald and has been as long as I can remember, but I don't think it started till he was way past 20. In his early 30's sometime at a guess.

I dont mean to sound selfish about this and I really do hope my bro's treatment works. Also I've noticed when I look closely at his scalp that he has little bits of flaky skin on there, is this a good or bad sign of anything?

Thanks for the help all.

Based on the information you have provided me with, you will begin to go bald exactly three days before your 20th birthday.

I have two friends that are twins. One has full head of hair and one is going bald really bad. So you could start balding but not necessarily.
There is 50% chance that you have inherited genes from your dad.

50%??? Did you just pull this number right out of your ***? It's more like 52.3%.

I am thin and my younger brother has a full head with no thinning. Just because your older bro is going down doesnt mean it will happen to you. Usually only one poor bastard in a family gets the affliction. Well that is unless you come from a really bad line.

For instance my girlfriends two brothers are bald, I am loosin it, my mothers father and brother were both chrome domes by 30. If we have a son he will have very bad odds of hair and might look like mini me by his 15th birthday. Get it?

This is why bald men should all get vasectomies. Except me - my genitals don't work so it would be rather redundant.

Thanks for the help all. I do know someone who is 26 and has a full head of hair yet his brother is a few years younger and has a bald patch, but I do know two brothers (not twins) who are both comepletely bald. Hence I really don't know if I am likely to start balding around 20ish.

Does anyone think it would be a good idea to start taking something like propecia around my 20th birthday whether my hairline starts to recede or not? Since at least then if I started going bald Id be saving as much hair as possible, or could taking propecia prevent your hairline from receding at all for a while?

Thanks.

A lot is said about looking at your father, his father...etc to see if you have a good chance of losing your hair.Mine has (nearly)a full head of hair,as does his father,brothers(3),cousins(2).can the gene be past on by the mother? her dad had a good head of hair in to his 30`s.

NO WAY!!!!!! The odds of you following the exact same pattern as your brother are slim. You may go bald, you may not and if you do it probably wont be at exactly the same time. Propecia is a drug and nobody should ever forget that. These drugs change the balance of your body's chemistry. Many people experience side effects also including sexual disfunction. Why don't you take a wait and see attitude with hair loss. If you start losing it, get on something right away and you probably will keep the hair you have and be happy (if it works). Don't waste your money and risk harming yourself for no reason.

Yes I agree, my dad is in his 50's and completely bald. I think he started to lose his hair when he was in his 30's but thats a guess, Ive never asked. His father was also bald, not suprisingly. My mams dad is also pretty much completely bald as well although he is in his 70's so fair do's. Yeah looking at that it is perhaps not really suprising that my brother started going bald at 19 and I know my chances aren't great either. I fully expect to be comepletely bald by my 40's but I really dont want to be starting to lose my hair around 20. I really could live with it in 20 years time, it wouldn't really bother me that much I dont think if I was 40 something and bald, but being 20something and balding is different I think. I know how vain that sounds but I'm just being honest.

Thank you very much for that, I hadnt thought about the side-effects of propecia, your right, I should only take it if I need it rather than as a way of preventing balding.

Good thinking. Why f#ck with your body if you don't have to?

my older brother has a thick full head of hair, i'm 4 years younger and almost have a bald spot on the crown, with diffuse thinning all around. none of my cousins have any sign of hairloss, either, and some of them are in their late 30s! so, you never know. just keep an eye out and if you see some thinning, get on some medication. otherwise, enjoy life and don't worry about hair.

My dad is 66 and still has nearly a full head of hair, slightly receded at the temples. I'm 44 and I suspect I'll be a full fledge chrome dome within 5 years. Both my younger brothers have full head of hair. It seems to me that unless the genes are really strong like a few have described here there really is no rhyme or reason to male pattern baldness. Just sit tight and don't think about it right now. Address it when/if it happens.
