Why the vertex only?

I have always been curious about why treatments tend to only work on the crown area moreso than on the hairline?

Is there something special about the follicles there or something? There must be a reason...

What I see is that on the temples there is usually much more agressive hairloss, where the area goes slick bald. Whereas on the vertex (and middle front part) the hair thins but usually some very thin/vellus hair remains.

True, but I think there must be some other powerful influences at work as well. It is strange because even today we still haven't developed an available treatment to regrow the hair line, besides a hair transplant (which is expensive, with modest results and permenant scarring). Genetically it seems as though your body has completely forgotten where the hair line originally began.

My only guess is that frontal hair is a lot more sensitive to the influences of DHT.

Aside from this, my temples have always been thin compared to my vertex, even as an infant. I've noticed most girls don't have thick temples as well.

If that is the case then why do some people just start balding on the vertex and have a perfect hairline? super strange...

So why do some people only bald from the vertex and have a perfect hairline then???

"Perfect" hairline? Doubt it bro. It could be their hair is combed to the side/down, and/or the temple loss may not be that bad, but yeah, no. If you can show me a picture of a man with crownal loss and a "perfect hairline" I will be amazed, because that is about as rare as seeing a guy with balding on the lower back. <-- strangely I've seen that at my workplace. :p

This question by the way had a lot to do with a particular question I had, which is why men lose hair on the top in general.

Simply put, it all has to do with how vulnerable certain follicles are to your...well...bloodstream.

No man, seriously I have seen people with just a bald patch and a perfect hairline, no kidding because their hair was cropped short. One good example would be Sam Mitchell, the head coach for the toronto raptors, as well as Zidane the french soccer player, someone else who i noticed is the father of George Lopez's wife on the George Lopez show...

It's really strange as the hairs on the hairline should be weaker?

Yes this is perfectly true. There are many men out there who are balding on the CROWN area (near the back of the head), and yet have perfect hair lines. I think what someone might have confused this with is balding on the VERTEX area (the top of the head just above your forehead, above the hairline) and still having a perfect hairline. This, I believe, is even more rare, possibly the rarest type of male pattern baldness, but I've seen it as well.

Frankly I wish I was balding on the crown. Being a receder is the worst :sobbing:

Ok.

I've looked at Mitchell, but I did not notice any crownal business. Not saying I've seen a back picture of him but I looked at him from other angles and couldn't see low crownal density around his head. He may have this but since it's probably very minimal I'm not surprised he has a good hair line.

As for Zidane, wtf? Temples receded like hell...by perfect hairline I mean a straight one, not a definite triangular shape.

haha, when people started mentioning perfect hairlines with bald crowns I immediately thought of Sam Mitchell... I'm from Toronto so I've seen him a lot but I didn't think anyone here would mention him. oh and btw, he's the EX head coach of the Raptors (thank god).

But he is a perfect example of this case though. But seeing how it's so hard to find an example like this, maybe that why for the vast majority of men, treatments work better on the vertex than hairline.

My thought is that the rate of temple miniturization exceeds that of what treatment can do, but top/crownal miniturization is slower than treatment. This is also probably why those who don't "respond" are hardcore alopecia sufferers. If I don't get treated with Propecia and Min, I'm one of them, but hopefully this isn't the case.
