Why “nothing is working” is a common phase in hair loss

One thing we notice a lot when reading threads here is people saying, “I’ve tried everything and nothing works.”

Most of the time, it’s not that nothing works — it’s that the timeline is misunderstood.

Hair works in cycles, not weeks. If something is helping, you usually don’t feel it right away. Shedding might even increase first. Density changes come later. Thickness changes come even later than that.

This is where frustration builds:

  • people switch treatments too fast
  • stack too many things at once
  • or quit right before changes would’ve shown

Another issue is treating symptoms instead of the process. Supporting scalp health is important, but it won’t instantly undo follicle miniaturization. And aggressive treatment won’t help if the issue was temporary shedding in the first place.

At Otter Hair Labs, most of our work is focused on helping people understand what stage of the hair cycle they’re actually in, so expectations line up with reality.

Curious how long others here waited before deciding something wasn’t working.

If you’re feeling stuck in that “I’ve tried everything” phase, we’ve put together a practical eBook at Otter Hair Labs that explains why hair stalls, what actually drives regrowth, and how to work with the hair cycle instead of fighting it.

It’s a science-backed, 90-day framework focused on scalp health, hormones, stress, and nutrition — no drugs, no surgery, no products being pushed.
Just a clear plan for people who want something structured instead of guessing.
