My old piece got a ton of knots in it recently, and I dismissed it as a fluke. But, upon washing it again, I had issues again. Shampoo'd, conditioned & my hair piece looked like it was some dreadlock system.

Upon rewashing and conditioning , I got the knots out w a different brush.

Is this wide tooth comb causing knotting and tangling issues ?

The only other thing I can think of as being the source of the trouble is my new hair gel...

BOTH, actually. But it could be the way you are doing it.

Hair matting has a number of causes, you need to be meticulous about carefully brushing or combing out the hair, every morning and after washing the system.

I only use a Tangle teaser brush.
