What's The Proper Way To Dermaroll?

Hi!

I've been doing dermarolling (1mm) for my hair loss for a month now. But I somehow feel like I'm not doing it properly. I start horizontal, then vertical, then diagonal, rolling around 10 times each, and it all takes just 3-4 minutes. My scalp ends a little red but nothing more. I'm doing it once per week.

Am I doing it right? Should I do it any other way? It's once per week too much? It's 1mm too long for male pattern baldness? Thank you!

I don't do minoxidil. I take Finasteride 1mg, hair vitamins, scalp massages and keto shampoo twice per week.

Bump

I've read that 1mm is too long for hair regrowth...is that true? In which case, what size? I'd like some answers please...

Ideally you want more than 1mm. 1.5 is the most common and some even use 2mm. The goal is to basically just massacre your scalp so your body releases growth factors which in theory should help growth (assuming you’ve at least got maintenance from finasteride).

Ideally a derma stamp is better as the rollers aren’t even made of needles but rather surgical disks that can tear your scalp. Better yet you could get a derminator / pen.

During the healing process the cells can be pushed into creating follicles instead of skin by the use of minoxidil, otherwise they just create scar tissue. You want to go at least 1.5mm deep to wound enough. You don't need to go deep enough to bleed though.

If you're not going to use minoxidil then I would not recommend going any deeper than .5mm. You won't create new follicles without using minoxidil, but you can still release growth factors to thicken existing hairs. At .5mm you may be able to do that without creating scar tissue.

But I've read in several places that dermarolling alone is pretty much effective even without Minoxidil, since steam cells and collage are needed to heal.

I'm not doing Minoxidil at least for a year now. My hair loss is nothing too big except on the crown, and I want to see if Finasteride alone is able to regrow that part. I don't see myself using minoxidil for the rest of my life to be honest.

As I said even without minoxidil it does release growth factors to thicken existing hairs, but it does not induce neogenesis without minoxidil or perhaps a Wnt agonist like SM-04554. I don't know if anyone has tried it yet, but wounding and applying a Wnt agonist should theoretically work just like minoxidil+wounding. You can try going a little deeper and using SM or something similar to create new follicles. Otherwise there's no sense in rolling any deeper than .5mm, but you would want to do it daily rather than just once a week as the MOA is different.
